Not sure such a place exists, at least in Keene proper. The closest state campground (fires allowed, but there is a fee) would be Sharp Bridge: http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/d...nds/sharp.html
Conversely, if you can get a parking spot at the Garden, you can walk a little ways in towards John's Brook Lodge, and stay at one of the leanto areas-these are all free of course, but then you can't have fires, since it's in the High Peaks Wilderness.

The one place I can think of that might fit your bill would be the "primitive" campsites near the Roaring Brook trailhead off RT 73 in St. Huberts, a little south of Keene. No fee, but I'm not sure whether fires are allowed here-it's in the Giant Mountain Wilderness. I've never stayed there, but I imagine there's someone on this board that has. I'd find out for sure whether or not fires are allowed in that area before deciding. Good luck.

Just wondering if anyone has any more details on these campsites. In particular, are they easy to find, and how busy do they tend to be? I'll have a long drive to get there, and will probably arrive in the evening hours, hopefully before dark. But having no previous experience, I'm a little worried about availability of parking and distance to the campsites, etc. It's probably going to be a weekday (non-Friday), so I'm guessing it shouldn't be too crowded? Also, are they tent sites or lean-tos?

      Thanks in advance!
