Best odds are to catch other hikers heading up or meet some hikers locally to ride up with...

There is a bus that goes into Keene Valley. Tickets home can be obtained at the Noonmark Diner. I am not sure where you get the tix for the ride up.

Adirondack Trailways Bus Line is what you want
          800-776-7584 or alternatively Trailways

MountainMike , If you take amtrak(http://www.amtrak.com)click on schedules , scroll down to Adirondac and click on it. This will bring up the Train timetable , at Westport they show a shuttle service to Lake Placid , you could call and ask for info.
Also there is a car rental company in Westport , Rent a Wreck http://209.251.41.220/LANSAIMG/RAP/F...T/WESTPORT.htm
I have never taken the shuttle or rented from Rent A Wreck , but I figured I would give you as much info as I could find.

Are you taking the train because you want that trail ride up the Hudson Valley, with the nice views? (sit on the left side of the train)

If not, do you know that the trailways buss leaves from Long Island (queens village, corner of springfield Bblvd and Hillside Ave), and will drop you off right at the Noonmark... at around 4-5 in the afternoon. Plenty of time to make it to the JBL area and set up your camp.

I live in the lower Hudson Valley and I'm always looking for hiking partners. Unless you really want to take the train send me an e-mail, maybe we can carpool.
