This little mink surely isn't as cute as DeepForest's Pine Martin, but it was fun to watch today! It was on/in the Saranac River, and was quite successful diving for fish.
NICE PICS! I like the last one. It's in full stride, fish in mouth and all.
The few times I have seen mink there were always 2 or more. Was this one alone?
I believe it was alone. I watched him for about 30 minutes and never saw another one... nor did I see more than one at a time. One of the pictures I took of his left side may show some type of old injury. Many times Bald Eagles are seen along this section of the Saranac River, and I would think a Mink would be a good meal for an Eagle.
Great pictures, I would've been so excited to see something like that, thanks for sharing the pictures. How is it he did not detect your presence and run away?

ellsaf,
I was a good distance away from the mink, was VERY quiet and still, and I was using the equivilent of a 737mm lens.
Great pics AdkGal !!! Mink certainly are very cool animals to watch Couple questions...how long did that mink stay under water and did it catch more than one fish?

In the time I was standing there, he dove once, was down approximately 35 or 40 seconds, and came up in a different spot with the fish. When he came up on the ice with the fish, he stayed about a foot from it for several minutes just staring at it.
Great photos. The last mink I saw was a few weeks ago. I would have loved to get a shot of it. I was driving on River Road?(The road that goes along the Ausable River from Wilmington Notch to the ski jumps.) Anyway, the river was mostly frozen at that time and there in a 20' diameter open spot was a Mallard duck and on the ice next to him was a Mink. They were looking at each other and only 10' apart. I almost turned around but I figured the Mink would run off.
