Ok, gotta ask the obvious on this pic, location?
Ok I'm not sure of the exact location this pic was taken. I believe it was near the Rocky Mts. North or South of the border , again not sure.
Looks like a Black tail to my untrained eyes.
The pic was worth kidknapping and sharing because , the deer did not see , smell , or even hear the kitty stalking it . Think you would ?

Glad you left them alone , and took pics
Poor job of hideing them they did
The better ones don't flash , even at night.
If I had a few $$ invested in a trail cam, It wouldn't be that obvious.

They were not on or near any "trail" where anyone might expect them to be found. I was bushwhacking a fair distance from any real trail in each case, and caught them on segments of game trails that happened to be going my way. One was pointed at bird seed??? hanging from an elevated log on the edge of a marsh. The oddly hanging bird feeder bait is what first caught my attention 30 yards away and drew me over to inspect it when I got flashed by the camera - then I suddenly realized what was going on.

I use trail cameras for my work, but I've been locking mine up with steel cables lately. If you want good pics you have to put it in a fairly open spot with a clear view of the area of interest, so if anybody walks by, they're going to see it. If its so hidden nobody can see it, you probably wont get any good pictures.

Even the "flashless" cameras with infrared illuminators usually give off a fairly noticeable red light from the LED's when they flash. At least mine does.

good points If I have not made it abundantly clear yet , I've never used a trail cam.
Never thought about leds , Just thought a big aperature and slow shutter speed was all it was. The red light makes more sense though
Have you tried any of the "bear proof" boxes and straps ?

Just a question for discussion not an opinion...

Eastern cougars are federally listed as endangered. In NY they are listed as extirpated, but they're on the state's endangered species list too.

However, if this cat is not an eastern cougar (i.e. if it's actually a released "pet" from western "stock" and not an eastern cougar at all) would it then really be a crime to shoot it? I think the shooter might have a case...

Most people should not be aloud to have a dog as a pet, as far as I am concerned

Nation's Dogs Dangerously Underpetted, Say Dogs

NEW YORK—At a press conference Monday, representatives of the Association of American Dogs announced that the nation's canines are dangerously underpetted. "Every night, thousands of U.S. dogs go to bed without so much as a scritch behind the ears," AAD president Banjo said. "If this sort of neglect from our masters continues, it could lead to widespread jumping on the furniture." Upon his owner's arrival in the press-conference room, Banjo abruptly ended his speech, frantically barking, leaping, and rolling over on his back in an effort to communicate his need for a vigorous belly rub.
Under exercised, under petted, not fed properly etc.

Still no legal reason except self defense.
If soemone mistakenly shot it what would a legal reason for the mistake be.
Its like shooting a doe in the ADK.
You should have identified your target better before you shot.
                No excuses.

This a pic from I think California that's made the rounds as a hoax (they're mounts). It's even turned up in New Jersey. The companion pic is on the ECF's website under the hoaxes page.

Aside from the fact that there's no evidence, none, from Camden, all this speculation about a released cat is hooey unless someone steps up and alerts the authorities that they've released one. Otherwise, and until the USFWS makes a decision on the status of the eastern cougar, any cat found east of the Mississippi is federally protected.

Unless one leaves a piece of itself behind for analysis, or is captured or killed and analyzed, there's no way of even beginning to know where a cougar's come from.

                    Mountain lion

Well seems to me that the reports, the habitat, the tracks, should all be pretty easy to validate. The tracks on the video clips were cougar I assume somone is looking at them to validate. I hope no one shoots the animal, it would really be a shame if someone does. If I am not mistaken they are still federally protected so If someone does shoot him I hope they prosecute the person who does so. It would be nice if us humans could give nature a break for a change. If anyone is worried about living with big predators then dont live in a rural area after all there are plenty of cities out there.
The more wilderness in the Adirondacks, the better.
