    Golden Eagles

I came across this link to Golden Eagle status in NY State- some interesting info here. It appears that the only activity across NY State and most of the eastern US is at migration time. The Goldens need more open (and yet isolated) country than we have here with our heavily forested areas.

    Anyone ever spot one?

I'm assuming you're asking about in the Adirondacks?

No, haven't seen any here. Saw two immature ones in the Allagash Wilderness in Maine and many back home in South Dakota and other Western States.

Some jokers put a dead deer on the ice near the Glenmore Rest. in Big Moose and watched a pair of Eagles feast away. This was two or three winters ago. They have pictures!

About 8 years ago I saw one overhead as I drove home from work in the morning. I followed it and it ended up resting in a tree that was in between a mall parking lot and I87, I was able to sit there a few minutes and just watch it. I felt so lucky to have spotted it in of all places the middle of Colonie, NY.

Here's a link that might be interesting. Observers count raptors at Derby Hill - a bluff located along the shore of Lake Ontario near Oswego - from March through May. Last spring, 100 migrating Goldens were observed.

I was there a couple years ago on a day with a warm south wind, and many hawks were at eye level and gave us perfect views without binoculars. Didn't see any Goldens that day, but we saw a few Balds. DH is a pretty cool place.

Not a sighting and I'm pretty sure I may have posted this before, and it's second hand, but my cousin's dog was attacked by what they believe was a Golden Eagle in Averill Park.

The Vet assumed that it was either a Golden or a large Bald Eagle based on the size of the talons causing the injury, as well as the size of the dog. The dog is around 40-50 pounds. This was about 2 years ago.

I took this photo yesterday from Sawteeth Mt. The bird soared overhead for a while and flew to a spot on the cliffs on the side of Pyramid Peak.

When I got home I showed the pic to Kevin who pulled out his brand new Peterson's Field Guide on birds. After some looking, it does appear to be a golden eagle.

Val, Looks like you've got yourself a picture of a juvenile Golden. Nice addition to the hike!

So some cutting a trees is good for that bird? Wow.

A few months back on the DEC website I was looking at a report of the last few years of Eagle populations in NYS. I can't remember how far back the statistics went. But they had one Golden over that whole time, well one that were residents here.

I think it was found dead of unnatural causes.

They listed alot of interesting info about the nesting eagles in the state.

The statistics sounded to me alot like the bald eagle is making a strong come back in this state.

If anyone can find it, its good reading.
They had a tracking set up, on one of the balds, it showed up in California.

Since 1969, a pair of adult Goldens have overwintered along Stissing Mountain, just West of Pine Plains in Dutchess County. Most times you need a scope to see them however. FWIW - the last successful G.E. breeding occurred in 1970 in Hamilton County (believe this was at the MRP site). The last known nesting attempt (eggs laid) was as the same site in 79; no young hatched.
