    Bobcat

I'm not looking to start a debate

I just thought some of you would find this article from our local paper interesting.

    Here's a link..

Interesting, thanks! I'm glad to hear their is a "healthy" population in the ADKs - I have heard conflicting information on their numbers over the years.

O yeah! We have lots of Bobcats.
There are a lot of signs of them at least. The Cats are normally smart enough to stay away from humans. Ha! Ha!

I've seen bobcat here, and I can't be sure but thought that i spotted a lynx once.

Shouldn't be surprised that they are here. Lots of wildlife that people don't see. I live in Wells and in eight years I have seen about 13 moose in the area. Yet, there are people who have lived here all their life and have never seen any, so they swear there are none.

I've seen cougar and a wolf once, right here in Wells, right from my yard.

I've never observed a bobcat in the wild. Apparently their population and range are expanding. Two have been killed by cars within 5 miles of my house and I live just outside Syracuse.

Bobcats...."the little kitty of the woods"
I have seen them many times and though I don't trap, yet know trappers, I never tell them where I see them. They are cool to watch move through the woods. Real cool!!!

From looking of the photo of the dead Bobcat, it doesn't look like it died from starvation. It doesn't look starved or famished. I'm curious if the DEC of F&W will do a blood analysis or an stomach autopsy. Perhaps the Bobcat ate something poisonous?

I saw one when I was a kid, I'll never forget it. I was maybe 10-15 feet away from it. I think we both scared each other. It just stood there while we checked each other out then it trotted off into the woods.

I guess that's what I get for walking softly.

I'm sure that the state wildlife pathologist will at least do a quick test for anticoagulants (rat poison). Thats my bet. Lots of house cats die that way too. My sister's did.

Look real close at that picture. I swear that bobcat has a smile on it's face.

Maybe it died laughing over it's long-haired chihuahua attacker?

I can't actually speculate on what may have caused it's death, I don't have much of background in veterinary medicine but it's a shame to see such a beautiful animal die like that. It's also a shame that instead of dying in peace as the animal probably wanted that it had to deal with a yipping ankle-assailant in it's last moments on earth. I certainly don't want to go like that.

What about anti freeze poisoning that's how my cat died years ago. Horrible way to go.

I live in Conesus, NY on a hill with about a ¾ of a mile of woods in every direction. This summer one morning when I was leaving for work about 4:45AM wearing my headlamp to get to my car I spotted my big tom cat face to face with a bob cat, about four feet apart. When they saw this one eyed six foot monster coming at them they broke their stare at each other and my tom ran off fast as a bullet. On the other hand, the bobcat wasn’t scared of me and just turned and walked away into the woods.

This is a little scary because it tells me I may stumble on one by accident and the bobcat won’t run.

Whats really scary is that if you didn't show up your cat would of been breakfast for the bobcat no doubt.

But seriously a bobcat would not attack a human unless you were a threat to it or it's young.
