    Bold little critter

I was snowshoeing at Grafton State Park today and saw this little critter scurrying around on the snow.

I was surprised when he ran right up to me and onto my foot.

I was shocked when he climbed up my leg! He did get a little higher than seen in the picture but at that point I let him know that I was human. It did take a couple words until he got down. I was happy to have my camera.

That's crazy! Something similair happened to me in Latham with a Squirrel one time while I was getting gas. Apparently the little guy thought it was a good idea to follow me into the gas station door. once he came in and put his front paws on my shoe, I was amazed.

It was a younger squirrel, being a high traffic area I wondered if his family may have ended up road kill and he was the only one left or something. After assuring my girlfriend that our cat didn't need a friend I was on my way.

          that's awesome!

had similar experiences while hunting (sitting still for a long period of time)
but never saw anything like that while standing still for just a short time!

            Pretty cool!

sacco-me too, while on watch for long periods:

Chickadees landing on me, my rifle barrel, hat....more than once.

Red squirrels chasing one another..running right across my legs....

Deer standing FEET away....until I couldn't stand it any more and started to giggle

Chipmunks galore doing whatever they want....

There's more, but I can't recall right now!

The longer one stays still the more one will see!

Adkleaddog's list reminded me of the Boy Scout merit badge requirement (IIRC was Environmental Science) where the boy had to sit and observe nature for a few hours. We all called it "the sitting in the woods for ten-thousand years requirement". Saw quite a bit like on your list. Thanks for the memories.

So what is it, a baby muskrat?
Alcot Smith, who taught the tracking class I took a few weeks ago, once had a baby porcupine climb right up onto his shoulder. He took a picture of it posing next to his head.
He found himself wondering at times, especially in the autumn, about the wild lands, and strange visions of mountains that he had never seen came into his dreams.

Here's another not so little critter we came upon on a hike to West Stoppell Point in the Catskills. He was too busy eating to pay much attention to us so I was able to get pretty close.
Hobbitling - I don't think I'd want this porcupine on my shoulder!

That's a cute little guy. I found a short tailed shrew this weekend (frozen solid) and it was the oddest looking thing with a very long pink snout. I hadn't realized before that they are venomous. Interesting creatures but I wouldn't want one crawling up my pant leg. He is lying in state on top of the shed.
