    Large Bobcat Sighting

I was out for a drive today near Cossayuna Lake and saw a LARGE bobcat. In fact, my girlfriend saw it first from a distance and thought it might be a coyote. My response was, "That's a good size coyote." As we drive closer (it was right in the middle of the road), we realized it was definitely a bobcat, and a damn big one at that. We got quite close before it took off into the woods, so there is not a doubt in my mind that this was a bobcat. I didn't think they got that big. I checked out some info on line, and all sources said bobcats get no larger than 30 pounds. This cat looked bigger than that, so I'm thinking they must have some pretty thick and long fur that makes them look bigger than they really are.

    Bob cat?

HI, are you sure it was a bob cat? Just how tall and how much do you think it weighed? So did you get a good look at the tail? How long was it? What color was the cat?
Sorry lots of questions, just want to be sure you did see a Bob cat and not a cougar. They are here, many have been sighted.

It was definitely a bobcat. We both got a good look at the bob tail. I would say it was as tall as my yellow lab. I just measured my lab and he's 2'6" tall a the top of his head. I couldn't tell you what color he was; I'm colorblind. I'll ask my girlfriend when she wakes up in the morning. If I had to guess, I would say grays and browns for color with stripelike coloring. I would have initially guessed the cat to be close to 40 pounds, but after reading that they don't get any larger than 30 pounds, I'm second guessing myself on the weight. There must have been a lot of fur on him because he looked bigger than 30 pounds.

        Roads

I was under the impression bobcats really stayed away from roads and developed areas. Also I thought they were nocturnal. Is this the case?

Johhnycakes, when I first read your original post and about the size, I immediately thought of a canadian lynx, as they are in the area and I have seen one near lake ontario before.

FWIW, Here are the skins for both (Lynx on right) with their tails:

Well, I live in Albany county and I have seen bobcats crossing the road in the day time. Usually around 10 AM. The one I saw last summer was huge and I would guess to be 40#. It was different looking from my other encounters though. It did not have any spots visible. Maybe it was a Lynx? I have read of large 40#+ bobcats being taken in NY last winter too. Who Knows? Maybe they cross-bred or it was a released pet cross. People do breed them for pets.

                Rick,

I'm not too observant with colors, etc. (as mentioned earlier), but I showed the photos to my girlfriend and she said that the coloring is definitely more similar to the pelt on the right, and that the cat we saw had no spots on its body, but did have spots on its face. I can't tell from the pelt photos if the lynx also has a shorter, bob like tail, but the cat we saw did have a short tail.
