    Clarence Petty

    I'm curious.....

    Is Clarence Petty Still alive?

Is the Petty house still in existance at Corey's.

Dick and Joanne gave me "The Extraordinary Adirondack Journey of CLARENCE PETTY", Wilderness Guide, Pilot and Conservationist by Christopher Angus with a foreword by Anne Bastille, which is a most fasinating book indeed. It really has a lot of History about the Tupper-Saranac area and people.

I am absolutely spell bound by this man. If ever there was a role model for me, this would be him. I think if he is still alive, I would like to find away and sit down with him and respectfully listen to what he has to say.

If you are unfamiliar with this book, and you are interested with Adirondack History, then this is a must read. I believe that getting to know about this man. is to get to know the true spirit of the Adirondacks.

And Thank You Dick and Joanne for this book. My life is becoming more enriched as I peruse it's pages. I am not reading this book, I am digesting it, savoring every word, gorging my mind with each paragraph.

Add Clarence Petty to the list of people without whom knowledge of the Adirondacks is incomplet.

Now, when is the book about Grace Hudowalski due out? There has to be one.

He's still alive, well since my last delivery of Adirondack explorer.

usually towards the back of the issue there are 5-6 questions people ask him and they are printed.

here is an e-mail address for the paper.

I very much enjoyed reading the book about Clarence Petty and recommend it. It's pretty amazing he used to walk to school many miles every day in all kinds of weather, snowshoeing in winter on unplowed roads.

Actually he and his brother Bill Hiked into Saranac Lake from Corey's (16 miles) on Sunday and back home on Fridays. They boarded with a family in Saranac lake during the week to attend school.

Even more amazing is the fact that the boys were running trap lines about 10 miles at 6 years old in the Dacks and worked them alone. They often were hiking 10 or so miles in the dead of winter at night and there were no lights and only dirt roads.

I have not heard of such a book yet, but sure there will be over time. Although she is in chapters of books. Like "Breaking Trail," the New Forty-Sixer book release date 2006 (I'm sure of that) and I'm sure "Women With Altitude," release May 2005.

I'll have to buy that book ! Sounds so intriqing.

If you like reading history of the Adirondacks, this is a great book. One of the best.

Yes, I do. Any Adk history interests me, but I am especially interested in Hamilton County and the Speculator area.

I assume you have read the books on French Louie then. How about the History of Hamilton County? There are a lot of books at the Wells Library that are specific to the dacks and the area, and we have a good used/collectible book store also.

I also have the good fortune of being surrounded by people who were born and raised in the area, many of them in their 80's and 90's and a couple in their hundreds. (They call me "kid")

The last two years some of the local residents have been establishing a museum in town for the History of Wells, which for most of the early days included Speculator, Lake Pleasant and Piseco.

                        Clarence Petty: 101 years old

I've seen postings at different times about Clarence Petty of Coreys, NY. I know people that have been associated with him, so I recognize the name. He's a respected Adirondacker; and one old coot! FYI, I see that the Utica Observer Dispatch, on 1/19/07 has article about Petty entitled "101-year-old still protecting the Adirondack wilderness".

If anyone has any personal contacts with Clarence, please pass along to him that the people trying to save Duck Hole are/were looking for any input he may have regarding its historical nature. Only scant documentation by the lumbering companies remain.

We had his phone number and Redhawk had left a few voice messages with no return calls . This would have been spring/summer last year.
