    A Puzzle - US Grant

I was watching Ken Burn's, "The Civil War" on DVD and something that was said, I have been trying to research.

The documentary stated that in his final years, Grant went to the Adirondacks, to Mount McGregor to write his memoirs, which he finished on July 16, 1885. It said he died there a week late on July 23, 1885.

Is Mount McGregor, which I believe is in Saratoga County part of the Adirondacks? Where is the Blue Line in Saratoga County?

Boy, I can't find where the Blue Line is documented but all searches for Mount McGregor list it as in the Adirondacks.

    Most noteably, probably this one

Which is a list of Permits Issued by the Adirondack Park Agency
For Telecommunications Facilities. It definitely classifies Mt. McGregor as part of the Daks.

If I find a good definition of the boundaries I'll post it.
But so far, this is the best that I could find at: http://www.bookrags.com/Adirondack_Mountains

The mountains are often included by geographers in the Appalachian Mountains, but they are geologically more similar to the Laurentian Mountains of Canada. They are bordered on the east by Lake Champlain and Lake George, which separate them from the Green Mountains in Vermont. They are bordered to the south by the Mohawk Valley and to the west by the Tug Hill Plateau, separated by the Black River. This region is south of the St. Lawrence River.

Yes it was the Mount McGregor located in Wilton, NY (Saratoga County). While not within the Adirondack Park, Mount McGregor and the rest of the Palmertown Range is geologically part of the Adirondacks.
A man needs to believe in something. I believe I'll go hiking.

So we can have a riddle.......

When are the Adirondacks not the Adirondacks?

Thanks guy's that clears it up. The Adirondacks are geological while the park is geographical..

Apparently historians don't spend a lot of time determing the location of Mt. McGregor vis a vis the Adirondacks. For example, William McFeely in his well known 1980 biography of the general writes that the cottage was "on the grounds of [the] resort hotel, Balmoral, a few miles north of Saratoga Springs, in the foothills of the Adirondacks."

McFeely opines that the Grant family was lured to the hotel by its owner who may have hoped that if Grant died there, the area would become a tourist attraction. Terminally ill with cancer, Grant arrived by train in Saratoga Springs on June 16, 1885. He then traveled on a narrow gauge railway for the twelve mile excursion to Mt. McGregor. It was there he finished his memoirs. Grant died on July 23. So much for that good mountain air.

The cottage stands today on the grounds of the Mt. McGregor Correctional Facility. Hawk you better let me go with you if you have any intentions of visiting the place...they might not let you out again.

I knew it was only a matter of time when someone would rise to Hawk's bait! Prepare yourself for a lengthy discussion of some of his favorite people in this world...law enforcement, lawyers, prosecutors and, oh yes, judges.

I thought I told you the story when we were at the Ward Brook lean-to Bruce.

Actually there were no lawyers, prosecutors or judges involved.

Just four Marines in a bar, two ex-marine law enforcement officers and one very frustrated and embarrassed police captain.
