    Trivia Question

Let me know if this sort of thing is interseting or just a waste of space. I love trivia and the Adirondacks, so it's a perfect combo for me. Let's start with a relatively easy one.

What 5 Adirondack High Peaks are named for former NY State Governors? (hint - 2 additional peaks share part of the name of one of the 5 Governors)

    Dix? lol

    Macolm, Hough, Marcy, Colden?

All guesses... that's the best part of trivia, guessing without the consequences! lol

Q: What was the first Adirondack High Peak to be given a name?
A man needs to believe in something. I believe I'll go hiking.

I'm not sure, but I would say that Giant was the first High Peak to be climbed? I recall reading that a surveyor by the name of Ryder or Rydell, or something like that had to climb Giant in order to do some surveying work. I thought I read that in an older version of Discover the Adirondacks. I believe the date of this ascent was circa 1790.

Giant it is, in 1797, by a surveyor named Rykert.

Redfield is correct. Now the last one for the day:

Q: Which high peak was the last one to be climbed for a first ascent, and on what date? Bonus - who were the climbers on that day?

Cause that brilliant wacko Melville Dewey (the same guy that brought us the Dewey Decimal System) though he'd invent a new way to spell, using primarily simplified spelling and logical visual sequencing. Ahh, needless to say, It did not catch on, aside from a few obscure Adirondack names.

Melvil (formerly Melville) Dewey was a proponent of simplified spelling and named it that way. He founded the Lake Placid Club who owned the Loj at one time. He simplified a lot of other words but fortunately none of them are still in common use! He also invented the Dewey Decimal Classification for library books, of course.

But I was correct first, :headbang:

let's turn it up a notch.

Q Which 2 peaks are geologically unique in that thier summits are comprised of syenite gneiss, as opposed to the anorthosite rock commonly found on the rest of the peaks.

or, for the less scientific minded.

Q Which southern high peak is named for a great American patriot and former commander-in-chief of the United States Army.
