Cardinals outside the Blue line ?

My wife and I have enjoyed having a pair or two of Cardinals for the past few years living near us. We feed them in the winter , and they hang around year 'round. This year we seem to have a whole flock of them
Has anyone seen an increase in thier population like this ????
There are as many females around as this bunch of males this winter.
Taken today , by my better half . Comments please .

    Phil

What a great shot! The red is all the more visible against the snow. I don't observe any more cardinals than usual in our backyard (southwest of Albany).

Last winter, there was at least one pair of cardinals hanging outside the break room in the building where I worked, just outside Utica. The female (with the pale coloring) would continuously fly into the window, over and over, tapping it with her beak, never seeming to tire of it. All winter long, on numerous days. I'll never know if she saw her reflection or just wanted coffee.

I haven't seen any yet this winter, though.

We've had cardinals fly into the bedroom window in the past (and yes, it's because they see their reflection). They also used to visit the feeder a lot, but ever since we changed to the squirrel proof feeder they don't come by anymore . I think they like feeders with large perches, which the new feeder doesn't have.

We live near Syracuse , been here going on 15 years. I liked haveing the Cardinals around , and got the "squirrel proof " feeder in the pic. It has the spring loaded platform in front , and we start with sunflower seeds , then as winter progresses , add in some of the fruit and nut mix . Just never seen so many hanging around before. This is going on two weeks now. Good thing they have lots of room to spread out around here for the summer time .

Lucky YOU! I live within the blue line and have seldom seen cardinals here. We have just about everything else, though. Last week, I jumped for joy when I saw a flash of red near my feeders, thinking it was a Cardinal! With a closer look, however, I realized I was seeing the red flashes of a flock of Pine Grosbeaks. They're not Cardinals, but they still are cute. They are quite friendly. In fact, one of the females flew up and landed on my head!!!!

Oh yeah..... tell your DW that is a great shot!

We have a different style squirrel proof feeder (a long tube with a few small perches on it). We had a feeder with a large perch around the entire bottom and they visited that often, as did the squirrels.

Yep , we also got a feeder like that for the same reason . I missed seeing the cardinals though , so we got the other. The squirrels still come but just clean up some of the shell on the ground.

You should really enter that picture in a contest. It's a beautiful example of natures best. If you can put that onto a 6 x 8 or larger glossy paper I would buy a copy from you, I'd love to have that on my wall.
