I don't know about anyone else, but from my photographically untrained eye these are some of the finest shots I've ever seen of these areas!

All are excellent shots. The first three could use a degree or two tilt counter-clockwise. The Cascade Lake shot must have been done with a filter and film, no way digital has come that far...

Looks like you picked the perfect weekend for your first trip. Don't get used to that kind of weather!
Beautiful shots. Avalanche Lake remains one of my favorite spots on Earth.

All were done with digital. The Cascade picture was with a canon EOS 1DMK2 camera. A cokin ND grad filter was used on Canon 17-40L lens.

              I covet your camera.
I figured you must have had a grad filter, especially with the sun in frame. is that a pretty dark one?

what advantage does the EOS 1d mark II have over the lower end 8mp DSLRs such as the rebel-xt? do you find that you can tell a difference? is the extra cash worth it (I'm shopping around, but that is way out of my price range)
He found himself wondering at times, especially in the autumn, about the wild lands, and strange visions of mountains that he had never seen came into his dreams.

A 3 stop ND grad filter was used.

The 1 series cameras are a whole differant animal. But the quality of the picture from the Rebel 350D is pretty much the same , there is a little more dynamic range with the larger sensor in the MK2. The big differance is the focusing speed and tracking abilty for wildlife and sporting events plus the extreme 8.5 frames a second. For general all around use the rebel is fine. The 2 first pictures were shot with the rebel 350D as i didnt want to carry the much heavyer 1D on the hike.

(by the way the rebel 350D-XT has been replaced with a 400D-XTi, 10 mega pixel with the better 30D focusing module too)

                        allow me to translate.
DSLR=Digital Single Lens Reflex (there are also non digital, film SLRs).
An SLR camera is one where you look in the viewfinder and see through the lens, which you can usually detach and change, like that enourmous white chunk of glass in our friend's avatar. if the viewfinder has a separate little lens on the front, its not an SLR.

Canon uses EOS to designate most of its SLR cameras. It means electro optical system. basically it means it has lots of electronic controls and sensors for focusing, metering etc..., as opposed to the old mostly manual SLRs

the Canon EOS ID mark II (IDMk2)is a professional model DSLR that costs around 3000-4000 bucks.
the Canon rebel-xt (also known as EOS 350D) is an intro level DSLR that costs around 600-800
they both have 8mp (8 megapixels=8 million pixels) on the image sensor, but I was wondering what the major difference was. at my skill level I doubt I would notice the difference or be able to take full advantage of all the bells and whistles the EOSIDMkII has to offer.

By comparison, the hubble space telescope has 16 megapixels. so 8 is more than enough for most people.
