It really depends on several things like if I am just passing through, have the time, the weather is co-operating or something in the scene will change enough to warrant not waiting. I always take pics in intervals so I can see what changes the changing light have on any particular picture. Good light can be the only thing lacking from an otherwise great shot.

I've found that sometimes light changes make all the difference. I've stayed in one location for days to get the different lighting possibilities, and atmospheric conditions. I can illustrate that by showing you Duck Hole, looking east, at 3 different times of the day.
This was taken at 5:30 am before the sun rose, with a 40 deg. tempature.
