    Pics of your Gear Room/Closet

I've seen Valerie's "pile" and Redhawk's museum room of gear, so what's your collection look like?

I had to make room for an electronic drum set I'll be getting next week. So I took some photos of the mess and cleanup that resulted in an improved storage system for my hiking/camping gear. I also added a light so I can actually see when I'm looking for something.

This is only 2 years worth of gear I've accumulated, and not all the gear I have (some is in the truck, my bedroom, etc). Out of view on the left hand side of the closet are old suitcases with heirlooms, an enormous duffle bag with my spare/summer hiking clothes, day packs hung on hooks, stuff sacks hung on hooks, and my sleeping bags (unstuffed).

First picture is when I started moving stuff back into the closet (sorry, didn't think to take any before photos - but believe me when I say it was a MESS! ). Most of the gear is on the floor, some of it out of view behind the chair. The second is the new space reserved for the drum kit with all the gear back into the closet and organized. The third is a closer view of the closet. It still LOOKS messy but the new shelf to the right has helped a lot (I actually know where everything is!).

Moral of the story - organization actually makes a difference. I have more stuff in less space, go figure!

Looking at this pile today had me worried about the balances on my credit cards.

Most of our stuff is stowed away on one side of our basement. Sleeping bags/thermarests hung on a line; backpacks hung on nails on floor joists, and most of the rest of the gear is on a metal shelf (four shelves), some of it "neatly" stored in waffle boxes, the contents of which includes "gear" we haven't used in years, and some of which we probably never would use. Sounds orderly. It isn't. Still more gear is in another part of the basement, including boots, liners, gaiters, poles, stoves, fuel, and whatever got dumped after our last hike (which eventually makes it back to the metal shelf, if not in the correct box), because we were too tired to put it in its correct place. Our "system" has almost ruined a marriage on more than one occasion (). The "system" has made us late to more than one outing, after a desperate attempt to find all the misplaced gear we need.

At least it's all paid for!

Kevin, what you saw was only the tip of "tip of the iceberg"

I have a section of my basement where a lot of my gear is semi-organized. I have a camping/backpacking section and a fishing section. What usually happens is the gear that is currently being used or is "in season" piles up on my dining room table where I do most of my packing. Since I camp just about every weekend spring, summer and fall I see no reason to store stuff for just a few days. It seems like I'm packing again just as soon as I'm done unpacking.

I would like to turn my spare bedroom into a gear room where my "in season" gear would be and I could pack there too. I have a vision of neat shelves, a table and a "pack stand" that would facilitate packing. The problem is I don't want to stay home to and take the time to do it.

            My "Museum" room of gear?

Only thing old enough to qualify as museum material is me!!

I wish I had a gear room. My "toy box" is a very rusty 93 Plymouth Voyager with 196,000 miles on it. The back seats have been out for the last 4 years and almost all of my gear is in a huge pile in the back. This includes my commuter bicycle, helmet, 3 pairs of xc skis, 2 sets of poles, snowshoes, 2 sleeping bags, 3 different sized packs, a tent, dehydrated food, stoves, you get the point. Most of it is in plastic milk crates or stuff sacks(not the big items ) so at least there is some organization. It makes it easy to take the right gear for a daytrip. Just sort out what you need at that moment. We use it for overnights a couple of times a year and just stack the crates behind the van and cover them with a tarp. The packs, food and clothing bags go on the front seats and the back can sleep 3 cozily. As far as worrying about theft I learned something a long time ago. If you drive a complete POS no one will ever give a look at the contents. Now you park a real nice SUV or sports car at the triahead and WWAAAHH!! somebody broke in .

Organizing materials in physical space is not exactally what I'd call my best skill (ask my girlfriend!), in other words.... I'd post a photo, but... I'd just embarass myself

Anyways, I have a storage unit that I rent.... Half of it is mostly junk I can't fit in the house, the rest is gear. Seems as though in the winter junk starts to exclipse the gear, but... in the summer the junk is exclipsed by the gear. I've actually been meaning to pick up a sample pack worth of gear and weigh it out, but.... you should see my girlfriends face at the thought of bringing it into the house I too used to use my car as a big huge 'tool box o' gear', but... the storage unit has been nice for being able to load and unload the car easily of gear. It's not heated or anything though, so I also have a closet at home for anything I feel is too sensitive for the super hot / super cold.

A separate room for storage of your stoves?

I can imagine. Making sure that no one walks or lays on or in any way damages any of the gear.

It would help if you make them give you a deposit!!
