I vaguely remeber a few years back reading about a chunk of land that was added to the Moreau state park. Included in this chunk of land was a trailed mountain which had good views of the Hudson River. Looking at the map the only thing I can think that it is is the Palmertown Range. Does anyone know anything more about this?

It is indeed a part of the Palmertown Range. The land that was acquired encompasses Grant Mountain and there are a number of trails on the land. I have hiked there once, earlier this year, and this is a very nice area IMO. A good color map is available at the park office, for a small fee (think it cost $1.00). There are nice views of the Hudson River and the surrounding hills in several spots along the ridge trail.Since I escaped to Cold Mountain

Val, if you recall the story I told of my aunt going for a hike up there, then getting lost for 4 hours? Well, that was up that mountain (and apparently over, and around
). They didn't get the map and paid dearly with a full search and rescue organizing when they finally got back to the park.

Your question is a good one as I had no idea there was a trail up Grant Mountain in there. Now I got to go check it out, perhaps this week-end. I did find this link to an informational page that talks about trails on that mountain. It appears some are inside the park some outside with free access.

Here is a map I made one time that shows some of the trails...
The best views are along the yellow marked trail (overlooking the dam and river).
Note, not all connector trails are shown.Comment

There are several trails that start off on Spier Falls Rd. The "trailhead" where I started off was at the end of the yellow ridge trail, and there was parking for one or two cars at the start of the trail with additional parking on the Hudson River side of the road, which would probably accommodate 3 to 4 more vehicles.Since I escaped to Cold Mountain

There is quite a extensive trail network in the park, I can see how someone could get easily confused and turned around without a map. The trails that I used were all well marked, but I found a couple of the trail intersections to be a bit confusing, there are no signs to tell you "this way to here" so the old compass can come in handy.Since I escaped to Cold Mountain

It is a nice area. Just a warning Val if you are taking Gerard. Both times I've been there in summer both myself and my dogs came out covered in ticks. Not just a tick or two but dozens. I wasn't wearing repellent but both dogs are on advantix and never seem to have problems in other areas. Not trying to discourage you but just make sure you do a good check after your hike. After the first time I even had to "bomb" my car since I kept finding them in there.Die Free and LiveComment

Thanks for the warning Rik. It might not be worth bringing Gerard. With his thick black coat its near impossible to find ticks on him.“One of the penalties of an ecological education is that one lives alone in a world of wounds.” ~ Aldo LeopoldComment
