    lookin for new hiking grounds

hey all i live out in east berne, which is bout 20-30 min sw of albany, out by thatcher park. im bummed cause my g/f has too much work this weekend ot go up to the adks to hike. so i was wonderin if anyone knew of any good hiking in the area, i checked out local hikes.com and they didnt really give too many long hikes. Thatcher park is nice and all but its not really a great place to hike, lots of people and id liek to be a little deeper into teh woods. i know some of u are from aroudn the area so if anyone can please help id be super appriciative. if not ill be one sad hiker this beautiful weekend.

    Hi Wiley,

I know it's not wilderness, but have you tried the Long Path? You can pick it up at Thatcher Park (or just west of) and hike south to Roemer's point (nice views west and south), or to Old Stage Road and beyond (all the way to NYC, for that matter!). I've tried it north also, but you have to walk a road for part of it. That's the longest trail in the area I'm aware of.

The Taconic trail east of here is a nice "local" hike (hour+ drive from east berne).

An hour+ drive south would also put you in the Catskills, which opens up a whole new range of possibilities.

If you're in Berne, then the Long Path would be a good bet. The section around Middleburg is nice (Vromans Nose and Middleburg Cliffs).

As Dick mentions, you're an hour (or maybe less) to northern Catskills - Windham, Blackhead, Black Dome, Thomas Cole are all close to you.

I thought of suggesting Partridge Run, but figured it might be too short (and populated) for you. If it's not too buggy, it's certainly a nice enough stroll.

Maybe the Escarpment in the Catskills? Or Devils Path? There's also a lot of good stuff in Western Massachussetts.
I'm in a club that's very into trail running, and they're always taking field trips to new places, for races etc. Their URL is:

Two areas very close to you are the Partridge Run WMA in Berne and the Black Creek WMA in Voorheesville. Each have a few short hikes. Black Creek is a beautiful wetland area with a few trails running through it. To find it do a mapquest search for Kling Terrace in Voorheesville. Access to the WMA is at the end of that road.

The Whites in NH. I'm going to be putting some pix up of some shots that I took last summer on my way up Lincoln & Lafayette.
