  • Thatcher park trails (in the winter)

Thatcher Park is so close and I've yet to hike anyplace other than the touristy spots near the lookout. I've heard there's a small trail system elsewhere on the hill but don't have any information about it.

Does anyone have any beta on the trail systems that are opened for snow shoeing during the winter months. Friend and member Bubbleguff wants to break in his snow shoes and figure this is a good place to start since we're both in Albany and it's only a 40 minute drive. Next year I'm going to take up cross countrying skiing as well, so it could be a nice exercise and practice spot for me.

Other place I'd consider is Grafton, but that's a bit of a haul from here.

If you park in the Paint Mine Lot (last lot on left), you can take the Long Path (aqua paint markers). It leads uphill to edge of park. Cross Beaver Dam road and continue up sledding hill. Path continues into woods and on up to Roemers High Point (with a view of Catskills and surrounding hills). I think it's about 6 miles round trip.

      Thanks Rivet!

Exactly what I was looking for, and the ideal mileage.

Thatcher is probably the best place to go around the Albany area. My question is are you riding a moped? 40 minutes from Albany. You need new directions.

I'd second this short but pleasant walk. I'm not sure about current snow up there, and it does tend to get sloppy in spring. For more info on the Long Path:

Just got back, it was indeed a pleasant trip up. There was still enough snow for snow shoes .

Here's a scan of the map we found at the trailhead.
