I prefer World Wind when I'm too lazy to pull out my paper maps. While paper maps make it easier to trace where you're going, and to put sticky notes on, I can use World Wind to measure how long a trail is, and see the surrounding terrain with USGS accuracy. Heres a screen shot of it.

Other then that, try websites by other hiking enthusiasts. I know AdirondackJourney has some nice maps on there (they blow up to full size too).
