    Posting waypoint and track files

    This section of the forum is reserved for posting waypoint and track files taken in the field with a GPSr. It's preferred that we keep the files in comma delimited (separated) text file format, which can be imported into any mapping software. However, ANY type of waypoint and track file is welcome and accepted.

    If you receive a message that the file you're trying to attach is not accepted, please include the file extension in the post so we can correct the issue. Once corrected you'll be able to include your file.

    It should be known that any attached files can only be viewed by registered forum members. By posting tracks of more remote or trailless areas we are not just 'opening up' the wilderness to the entire world. Please use your best discretion when posting tracks, being mindful that there is a chance of increased traffic through that area should people actual use your tracks. As a community we try to limit access to overly fragile vegetation areas. If it seems more appropriate to just share a few navigational waypoints then perhaps that would be better for the environment (in order to reduce the risk of training and herd path formation that could occur from strict adherence to a shared track).

    There's been plenty of discussion on this forum as well as www.adkhighpeaks.com and www.viewsfromthetop.com concerning taking personal responsibility for the information we share with other hikers. Not only do we potentially have some impact on nature, we are also sending people into the woods dependant on these navigational records. When we share keep the potential impact in mind, as well as accuracy of the data.

    If you're attaching non-text files, be sure to mention which program the file needs to be opened with.

    TPO = National Geographic Topo! Version 3 software (primarily)
    TPG = National Geographic Topo! Version 2 software
    MPS = Mapsource (Garmin)
    TXT = Text (usually contains data separated by commas (,,,))
