I recently purchased Camelbak's Octane 24 hydration system and could not be happier! To start, the pack comes with a 3 liter (100oz) bladder, complete with a quick connect mouth piece system. The tube convenently locks into the shoulder strap so it stays out of the way of your hiking poles and does not hit you in the face or wipe all over the place as you hike. The chest strap and waist belt take the load off nicely and the waist belt has small compartments on each side to hold small items. The pack itself has a fleece lined compartment for ipod, keys, cell phone, etc.. The main pack is large enough for the day hiker to fit quite a bit of gear (rain poncho, fire starter, small camp stove, food, knife, water pump). The pack also has slots built in to hold your trekking poles when not in use.
This was originally made for the trail runner i guess but I find it just large enough for day hikes, its not very heavy or bulky and carries just the right amount of gear for a good day hike (I use a larger Kelty pack for cold weather).
I highly recommend this pack but I also recommend you vist the Camelbak website and research these first to ensure you are getting the right hydration system for the type of hiking you do. I very rarely find myself in the woods past 4 pm and im on trails that are clearly marked and well traveled so the chance of having to spend a night in the woods is very low (although anything can happen so I like to have a fire starter/stove with my just in case) so I dont need a hole lot of pack space. hope this helps!!
