Gear Question

I am looking for opinions on Hiking boots and Jackets.

Tonight I tried on 3 different Merrell's at the store, decided I liked the Chameleon the best came home and ordered the Merrell Chameleon Wrap Mid gtx, has anybody has experience with either this boot or similar Merrell's that can comment on quality. I plan to use this as my primary hiking boot for day hikes on the high peaks.

Second, Marmot Precip womens rain jacket, does anybody have one or a similar Marmot that can comment on quality/function? My Fiancee tried on a couple Columbia's and North Face at the store tonight but they didn't seem as good of quality as the Marmot was described as but unfortunately the store didn't have any Marmot's in stock.

The Marmots are pretty good but I feel you sacrafice a little weatherproofness(is that a word?) for weight savings. I've never tried one but I want to try a gortex rainjacket next time. I'll have to wait until I have more cash though because they're not cheap. I keep my eyes open at Sierra Trading Post or Campmor for one to go on sale. Mtn Hardware makes the one I want.

If you are looking for inexpensive gear, also look at the for sale sections in all the different backpacking forums. Many people are either upgrading, selling off part of the overstuffed gear closet, or the gear just didn't fit them right.

I bought a pair of Merrel Chameleon Stretch shoes about 2 years ago. Since then I've put 400-500 miles on them and still love them. They are holding together pretty well for that many miles. I almost bought a second pair this summer but will wait for these to fall apart.
