What is the shellack used on rawhide snowshoes? the regular stuff you get from HD or is there something special I should use. Thanks.

Maybe something durable but flexible like epoxy? Boat building suppy should have it in larger cans than those little glue kits.

I've used "spar" marine varnish (not polyurethane) in the past and it looks great, stays flexible, and lasts much longer than shellac would. I think shellac may be more flexible, but you'll be re-coating every year. In either case, be sure you soak it into any windings & lashings while you coat the wood frame for extra protection from abrasion to those vulnerable areas.

Yes, the Varnish works well, it darkens the wood somewhat and really lasts.
