    Warm is good

With winter finally having reclaimed the month of December out here, I have had a chance to do some more testing on the Empire Canvas Works coat, vest, parka and mukluks shown below:

Long and short of it; They're warm. They vent well when needed. They are well designed and durable. Negatives? I am not going win any ski or snowshoe races in them, but I'm a medic, not a racer, so who cares?

I have been using the parka shell with a Cabela's Polarguard 300 hooded jacket when it's below zero, and it's very effective, but I just got an Empire wool Camp Coat for Christmas. I got my wife one last year and she swears it is the warmest jacket she has ever owned. This year I got one (in forest green, of course) and a matching Empire Jackpine Vest. The jacket does not have a hood like my PG 300, but otherwise it is very warm, and with the vest underneath, over a synthetic turtleneck, long johns and a wool shirt, it is definitely too much for all but the coldest days.

I switch back and forth between the Empire mukluks ("True North Boots") and my Stegers. The Empires are more durable, have a more rigid sole, and are every bit as warm. The Steger mukluks are more stylish. I like them both...what can I say?

The whole ensemble worked very well on Saturday!

More info or order from http://www.empirecanvasworks.com/

    Be safe,

    Hans

1 pound is a little heavy for a shell layer, aint it? $270 is a little steep too, IMO.

I've been exclusively using a Mountain Hardwear Backcountry Recon Parka this year (gifted to me, can be found online for $175-200) and it's top notch stuff. Can't imagine any animal skin beating the weight/performance ratio.

Are there any other reviews and comparisons of this jacket out there?

I'd like to try one...keep us posted on the parka Hans. Breathability certainly has it's virtues this time of year.

Actually, they are well covered. We have a team of skiers (including a resident MD), snowshoers, and winter-bikers (see below) and a snowmobile with rescue sled, so there is medical help within 2 minutes of anywhere on the entire course during the entire event.

Actually, I use skis and "normal" ski patrol gear for most events and patrol:

The Empire stuff is for recreation, dog sledding, winter travel and 'bragging rights" cold weather.

...and if my Empire gear ever fails to keep me warm, it will be "The Empire Strikes Out".
