    Map Case????

What I am looking for is a case to hold all of my National Geographic maps. I would like a map case that possibly zips up, and is about the same size of the map roughly. Doesn't need to be waterproof, maybe more of a rigid case. Is anyone aware of anything like this?

...All the map cases that I seem to find are waterproof map cases that hold the map open, clear so you can see the map, I'm looking for something a bit different. Thanks.

    Darn! No replies yet?
I'm also interested in a type of map case. The one I had in mind would be a clear, water proof case that will fit an ADK map or USGS/National Geographic type map. Possibly being able to clip it to your belt or somewhere quick and easy to get at, so you can look at the map often while hiking/bushwhacking without having to keep it in your pack, or worry about carrying it in your wet/sweaty pocket. Maybe something like a hunters license cover, but for a map? Can anyone help out with something like this?

I use a map case similar to this style most of the time. It folds into thirds and keeps the map under clear plastic. However, it is not completely waterproof.

I use one like this when canoeing or if I expect to be in an all day rain, as it is totally waterproof. You can see a map on both sides within. It is foldable, but a bit more bulky and not as handy to carry as the other type.

Either way, I keep the map folded to the appropriate area visible in the case, most always in my hand or in front of me in the bottom of the canoe for easy navigation reference as I hike or paddle.

I use this caseand using carabiners and flat lacing, wear it around my neck. I can easily switch the orientation by unclipping the biners and flipping the case.

You can sort of see what it wears like here

          A map case story

Nine years ago, I had a map case that I thought was the bomb. It had a clear side for viewing your map, of course, but the back side had pockets for storing things like guidebooks and compasses. Really cool, I thought.

Well, then I decided to go hiking in November, to Chub Pond near Woodgate. The problem was, I wasn't prepared for the cold weather yet--with non-cotton clothing. It was in the 30s and snowing lightly on and off. I did the hike, but I was getting pretty chilly towards the end. By the time I got back to the car, my hands and fingers had lost most of their strength. I couldn't turn the key to unlock my car door! I set my map case down on the roof, and using both hands I managed to unlock my car. Once I got inside I was able to get the heat going, and I was fine.

Not long after I got up to highway speed on NY 28, I realized I had left my map case on the roof! I stopped and turned back, and drove slowly back toward the trailhead and then back again. But I never found it. So I was out the case, one USGS topo sheet, one compass, and my original copy of Discover the SW Adirondacks--about $51 altogether.

I never bought another map case again. I did, however, buy some wool clothes that week.

Nowadays, I use gallon-sized freezer bags for holding my maps (freezer bags being a little sturdier than regular zip-lock bags). They are easy to replace when they wear out, and since nearly all my maps are now MyTopo maps, which are water resistant, I'm less concerned about getting them wet. I use the freezer bags mostly to keep them clean.
