I love my soft shells, lightweight for summer and now I've got a mid-weight for colder weather. Soft shellpants for winter by Schoeller. My favorite base layer is Smartwool. You just have to look for sales. Down coat for warmth when stopped. Merino wool balaclava. Wish it was Smartwool but I found one for half the price. Not quite as silky, but it will do. Nice light weight that just keeps that nice envelope of warmer air around your head. Throw on a windproof lined wool hat when stopped.
