    Upcoming Black Fly Season

Was wondering what people have had luck with as far as bug repellent during this season. Last May when we ventured out the normal “off” did not work to well.

    Thanks,

I always use Ben's but find that it still doesn't work that well. I start with the 30 deet but often I jump it up to the smaller and slightly more expensive 100 max formula.

There are still some tenacious bugs who decide to travel with me for miles at a time. I just assume they enjoy my company and accept the unfortunate fact that they will always be troublesome.

100% DEET repellants are most effective, though they are probably most harmful to people as well. Personally, they don't really bother me too much and I think a lot of the horror stories are overblown, but maybe it's because I'm so used to them. Mosquitoes and deer flies are my nemesis. I use Ben's repellant and Old Woodsman....also OFF makes a 100% DEET repellant.

I've read reports that say 100% is no more effective than 35%, just lasts longer.

            Black Fly Spotted

            They're back! And they're early.

I had a small swarm of black flies flying around my head while doing garden work today. Thankfully they're not biting yet. I live in the hills east of Albany. I would imagine this means that they'll appear early in the daks too.

100% Deet also gives you a quicker buzz. Bring a head net too.

We were on a walk today (Voorheesville/Altamont area, near Albany) and ran into them, too.

It could be one of those years. Different times I've gone through Memorial Day surprised as heck that they weren't yet a bother, but that's rare. Normally I count on them by the 2nd or third week of May, the same time the maple leaves unfold.

I've heard there are a couple of dozen varieties of black flies, and only a small subset of them bite. I've noticed that the early emergers don't bite. They buzz around seemingly unsure of what to do.

When they are biting, I rarely use much or any repellent because I keep moving all day, that seems to be most effective. If I have to stop, or when making camp and they get to me, then just a drop or two of Ben's on exposed skin will do. Make use of a good fitting headnet and a loose fitting shirt. Bugshirts, even though mostly netting, are too hot when you are active. Best advice, don't let the swarming bother you. You will have thousands buzzing around, but keep moving and bites will be few. It's often much a case of mental psychological warfare when they are all around you.

I havent seen any yet, but i'm further south now visiting family for the hiliday. So we'll see wha the situation is liek when i head back north this afternoon! And for the repelent I use Bens 100% Deet. Just a small dab on the hat brim or bandana and it wroks very well. I'm also one of those lucky ones withthe sour blood which the flies dont seem to enjoy! Either that or they like my g/fs blood so much they jsut concintrate on her and leave me alone

Will a repellent like Ben`s 100 or something similar w/ DEET work against ticks also????

Black Flies were in Harriman St. Park as early as April 20th and they were biting. I had no headnet because I wasn't expecting them yet. I had a hat and most of the bits were on my forehead near the rim of the hat.

Well they're here now and are biting in the N. Creek area.

Ben's? Deet? Allot of people swear by Avon Skin so Soft (Some people swear at it.) I use it on my dog and she seems to like it ok, and it makes her fur soo soft
