If you can swing a hundred bucks I'm 100% satisfied with Grivel 10 pointers. All you need for winter hiking in the Dacks but need them you will if you hike 12 months out of 12.

I'm in the same boat, Wiley. Check out ebay if you haven't already. They have a lot of crampons for under $50, though I have no idea if there are any brands/styles to stay away from. I'll look into those Grivel's, Neil. Do they work well with regular hiking boots (waterproof or gortex of course)?

They work very well with just about everything allthough I've yet to try 'em barefoot. Every year is different but I only needed them on 4 Mtns. (3 hikes) last year. Once the snow pack is in MSR snowshoes'll get you up a lot of stuff.

If you can't find something on ebay, check out BD Contacts (strap-ons). Mountain Gear was running them at $69 on sale pretty regularly last year. Used them on some fairly high angle ice/snow in Colorado and they worked great.

Grivel and black diamond are the best of the cheaper brands. I say cheaper because, relative to professional ice climber gear, they are. I'm also a believer in buying decent stuff if your life is going to depend on it. The times I've wanted or needed crampons were always times that I depended on them to scale ice that could serious hurt me if I slid/fell.

Cheap tires on my car? Generic power supply for my computer? Vaccine from the black market? College degree off eBay? Downloading prOn from the intraweb without antivirus protection?

So long as your looking for something for basic low-angle slopework. Which most Adirondack High Peak travel would be (along trailed routes) in this catagory, then a reasonably priced 10 point would be these Austri Alpin Neve's will work for you.

They work with almost any boot, including stiff soled and flexible soled ones. (you do have to change the setup though). They many not be appropriate for steep angled ICE travel, so I wouldn't climb the North Face with em for anything, but for almost all other winter HIKING uses, they be more that adequate. I have a pair.
