    Winter Hiking / Climbing Basics

I'm ready for my first winter hike this weekend.....

As far as gear goes....I have the basics....aggressive crampon snowshoes, crampons, ice ax, boots, gloves, hat, etc....

What are some items that you've found useful to bring along that one may not think about before hand???

    thanks....

I like to bring a thermos or a stove. Nothing like some hot soup, or hot chocolate, or hot ANYTHING an a winter summit.

You may not need the ice ax. Extra socks, and definitely extra gloves. I bring three sets of gloves. But I do some wacky bushwhacks that require crawling over and under stuff. Where are you going? Street and Nye are great starter trails. Phelps is good too.

        the stream crossing....

... could be difficult at street and Nye.

bring rain gear. Gore Tex if possible.

I heard it's still OK. But I wouldn't reccomend risking it if its not...

Warm hat, goggles for open summits, ski poles to help with ascending and descending steep sections, face gators, extra fleece shirts, flashlight, emergency food kit, put all clothing in plastic garbage bag before putting it in your pack, to keep everything dry from pushing through trees or dripping trees. Of course map, compass. Always leave your itinerary with responsible person before leaving. Always found bread bags handy to put over your socks, to keep them drier on your feet, in case boots get wet. Gortex Jacket. Always wear mittens as they are warmer than gloves. etc. etc.
