    bear cables

    Greetings,

Can anyone give me a reading on wether or not there are those steel cable arangements for hanging food (to keep them from Yogi and Booboo) in the Flowed Lands, Lake Colden Area?

I have seen these things in the Avalanch lean-to area but am wondering if they are also in the area specified above?

Also, does anyone have an estimate of the reliability factor for said cables? That is, if I hang my food on them, what is the probability that I will have breakfast the next morning, as opposed to a bag full of bear slobber?

Last, I understand that there will soon be DEC regulations to have a certified bear canister for your food for overnight camping in the Adirondacks. Does anyone know the exact date when it goes into effect?

    Thanks,

    SB

There are cables in the Flowed Lands and Lake Colden area, i have never used them because the trees they are attached to have claw marks all the way up to the cable. I have hung a bag in that area during the off season (late fall, early spring) and didn't have my bag taken. Generally if i am going in that area i find someone with a canister to go with me. I also avoid that area after mid to late june because of the large numbers of people. I'm sure other members of the forum will have better and more accurate info for you.

      The cables didn't work.

      Bears figured it out......

They are there. They apparently don't work. I can't give you a probability estimate, but I wouldn't use them, personally. There is a public comment period (required by law) which goes from May 18 to July 5. I presume it would go into effect shortly after that. See this notice, posted elsewhere on this forum:

the cables at flowed lands are behind the lean-to with out the floor. like others have said the trees holding the cables have claw makes up and down on them..

when i was there i successfully used them for two days by use of the counter balance method. i also taught some others how to use this method and they were find. the bear trying to get my food was at least 6 foot and between 350-450lbs...

but if you have uneasy feelings about these cables there are some great trees to hang in the area, provided you properly use the counter balance method....

          good luck

Thanks guys. In the end, we used bear canisters. As an asside, we where in the flowed lands 2 nights and we did not see a single bear sighting, nor any evidence of any bears.

When did you go in to the flowed lands? and from which trailhead?

                  Schenectady Gazette article

Front page article in this morning's Gazette (Friday) about bear canisters ... there's a paragraph in the article which states that ALL of the bear cables in the High Peaks region are going to be taken down "this week".

Unfortunately there's no link to the online edition of the Gazette 'cause they want you to pay for it!

The DEC has requested that people who are approched by bears asking for quarters, refrain from giving them to them.

It seems the bears have been using the quarters to gain access to some of the bear canisters.

I've also heard that the bears have formed a lobby which is pressing on the Swiss government in order to have the Swiss send them some of their army’s knives.

Bears with can openers and screw drivers can't be a good thing.

Some of our party hiked redfield and cliff. When I arrived, we did gray.
