I just bought a pair of soft shell pants. I would like to tell everyone how great they are. Comfortable all day long. and crazy water resistant. Wore them on snowy, and I love this stuff. Taking a longer trip this weekend, and can't wait to wear them again.

Oh Yes Hillman Great subject!! Ditto on the Softshells!! I got a pair of pants for Christmas. My winter hiking has changed completely. They bring comfort to a whole new level. Waterproof, windproof, breathable and roomy enough to wear a pair of running tights under when bitterly cold. I wouldn't wear them 3-season, but for winter they are awesome.
I thought about a jacket - but they are all cut close-fitting, I prefer a big bulky jacket, so I've stuck with my goretex.
BTW I have REI's which were about $129 down from $179 then.Last edited by Rick; 05-03-2005, 09:11 AM.Rick

I bought the ems brand. They are schoeller fabric, and retail for 130. I got them at the 20% off sale. I bought a pair for my girlfriend a few months ago, and have been a little jeolous of the pants ever since. I can't believe how comfortable they are. They stayed dry all day in a driving rain. The water beads off just like new gore tex. I will have to see how they hold up to time and wear. Wearing them again this weekend for lost pond.Comment

I have the same EMS softshell (top and bottom) and I wore then all winter long, both in and out of the ADKs. I beat the crap outta them and they took it all. The pants rock and since I "walk hot" I found that all I ever needed was the base layer, mid-layer (if it was colder) and the outer softshell. I barly used my hard shell all winter.
Oh yeah, I spent a goot deal of time off trail banging into stuff and it held up nice. I love this new stuffLast edited by Mavs00; 05-09-2005, 10:01 PM."I can feel your anger. It gives you focus. It makes you stronger. " Supreme ChancellorComment

I'm definitely a fan of soft shells, but with time and wear their water repellency declines and needs to be renewed. All you need to do is spray them with a DWR spray, most outdoor stores carry one kind or another.Comment
