    Satellite web site?

I requested (and got) info on this before but after searching for it I think the thread was wiped clean so here it is again.
I'm looking for a web address that will give me overhead imagery of the Adirondacks. Of course google is a help but if you have something you like please post it here.

What I'm hoping to do is get the coordinates for the top of a slide off the image so I can put them into my GPS.

Without a doubt (at least in my mind), this is what you need:

        USA Photo Maps - http://jdmcox.com/

Download this program. It allows you to "pull" satellite and topographic data from the Microsoft Terraserver. Get ready to fill your harddrive, I've downloaded over a Gig of data already. Plus, it is georeferenced and is compatible with most GPS data standards. I use this when I need precision waypoint data that is visually backed up.

Let me know how ya like it.

          AdRegion,
I installed it and it looks pretty awesome! Tell me, even when using Lat/Long is the datum important? I notice a 30 -50 meter East-West discrepancy between NAD 27 vs. WGS84 on TOPO!

The datum should always match Neil. And Adregion is right, USAphotmaps is GREAT. You can toggle between topo and photos.

I believe that PhotoMaps/Terraserver is using WGS84 by default. I hardly ever use NAD27 anymore except when I have to refer to the old USGS topos.

Check out some of the places that have the color map. Incredible. I'd love to get the entire world on DVD or something. Check out this article:

They are photographing the entire area to the 1-foot level? Scary.

http://www.expertgps.com/ is a pay-to-play client for terraserver... it's got some more features, and also uses GPX (pretty much the standard for GPS data) so it's easy to get that data into another app.

I use usaphotomaps too, I like that it only does the highest resolution of topos on terraserver.

This is a neat little program

it can take those black and white USGS ariel photos and apply them to the toppo info resulting in a 3-D look at the terrain.

I just downloaded it so I'm not sure about getting actual gps cords. and such but it's a neat program to explore with

Wow, that is cool. I've played with the DeLorme Topo thingie. It's got similar "3-D" functionality, but it looks like a cartoon compared with this. I'm beginning to think I should just launch myself into orbit so I don't waste so much time looking at aerial photos.

As a GIS Analyst my professional opinion is that the NYS GIS Clearinghouse is the best site for NYS imagery. They have the whole state in 1foot resolution CIR (Color InfraRed) Imagery and it is all recent (within the past 2-4 years). If you are a GIS person and have access to a good GIS program another great site is CUGIR . It is run by Cornell and is a repository for GIS data for all of NYS. They have tons of DEMs (Digital Elevation Models) and NYS Transportation DRG's as well as the digital quater quads (basically digital format of USGS quadrangles). I'm not sure how useful these would be to the average person who has no knowledge of what GIS is or how to use it but it's my .02 at least.

Just a follow up. I read this on Slashdot:
13.7BillionYears writes "Google's recent purchase of Keyhole and its jaw-dropping 3D earth-browsing software has apparently netted them ownership of an imaging satellite as well, now named 'gSat.' Basically Google has taken over a 1meter/pixel Keyhole satellite and will now be shooting new data to various places including the NASA World Wind thing. Also, has anyone fooled around with Google Maps? Their data is by NavTech, the folks that provide mapping to Garmin's Mapsource software. Along with Google Local, the satellite, etc, I sense a convergence of data that just might be overwhelming.
