I'm slowly working on adding FAQs (frequently asked questions) to the forum. Each section could potentially have one or more, depending on need. Once the FAQ is created and posted it will be added to the list of FAQs under the FAQ link at the top.

What I'm looking for are suggestions.

Not too long ago there was a thread/poll concerning the colors scheme of the forum. Several people were not aware that there were options for this. It is not covered in the FAQ.

Stay put until help arrives. Just wondering around when your lost, only causes you to become more disoriented and further lost.

Maybe a better question is how do I avoid getting lost in the woods? If you always know where you are it's hard to be lost.
And I for one would only stay put if I was injured or with an injured party.

When is mud season
When are black flies at worst
What are good high peaks for beginners
What are some cheap places to stay in HP area
Where do I need to use a bear container
Why do I have to climb Couch (sub 4000 peaks) for 46er

This might be fine for someone with your experience. But not everyone always knows where they are. Perhaps this is a good discussion for another thread.

Yes, that's the problem with FAQ files. They're never-ending. That said, all of your questions are good ones and deserve separate sections in a FAQ. Except for the last one. The answer to the last one is, "because you do!"

I would think preventing getting lost would be MORE important to a beginner than to someone with experience? I am confident I could get "unlost" if I needed to but I would think staying "found" is both easier and safer for a beginner and a skill that will serve them well throughout their hiking days.
I'm also not saying one should wander if they find themselves lost but in that situation there are too many variables to give just one piece of advice (stay put). If they didn't let someone know where they were going or when they expected to return it would be a long wait staying put.

Most FAQs are sticky material, but not all stickies will be FAQs.

That was my point. The original question was what to do if one (a beginner) finds themself lost in the woods. You DID say you would not stay put unless you were injured or with an injured party - fine for you and some others, but perhaps a FAQ file needs to be more basic, assume no previous experience, and address specific "for instances." Yes, lots of variables, and they need to be enumerated. Perhaps you would be willing to assist in writing a FAQ file for this? I can think of few others on this forum as well equipped as you to do so.

If anyone is interesting in volunteering a FAQ, just post your intention here (so we don't duplicate efforts). As I told Dick in a PM regarding the 'lost' FAQ, I couldn't write one because I don't feel I have the experience or expertise to do so. Beginner's stuff on climbing, no sweat. It wasn't that long ago I was a beginner so I guess it's still fresh in my mind. lol
