    Changes aren't permanent, but change is

    Some more recent changes at ADK Forum, with more details to follow. If your section is missing, it may no longer exist and the content was likely merged into the (now) "Everything Adirondack" forum. In an attempt to streamline the forums and get us back on track, I've done some serious consolidation. In time we may recreate some specialty forums.

    We're also hoping to return to a civilized atmoshpere. Many mistakes have been made by ALL walks of membership (staff and registered members). It's time to make some changes.

    We are no longer going to have a specific area of the forum for general, off topic discussion. We will try to keep discussion to the forum subject header. If you want to discuss politics please go to www.genmay.com .

    That is not to say pertinent hot topics that affect the Adirondacks cannot be discussed, but they have to be done in a civilized and respectful manner. To that effect I will not be personally engaging in any form of hot topic discussion in order to maintain a level of objectivity. Moderators will need to use their own judgement and discretion when posting in such threads.

    It is the hope of the adkforum staff that the changes being made will enhance your experience as a member. If you have other suggestions, please feel free to post them below.

                My opinion...

                ...which really doesn't amount to a hill of beans (as I admittedly have yet to add anything of value to this forum) is.... me no likes. The losses of some of sub-sections seems to take away the "character" of the forum, the one thing that seperates it from all of the other forums. Makes it seem kinda sterile and dry, but again, just my opinion.

                  Sterile is stable, in the case of adkforum. Staff consensus was to eliminate off topic. The decision to remove some of the sub topics (which isn't complete just yet) is an attempt to unify the forums. As separate entities the forums on a whole lost focus. We're learning as we go, each forum developes its own needs and character. This is more a response to where the forums are going from where they have been.

                  In time we may review the need for sub topics. You might say the forums are going through an inventory. It won't be tomorrow. Part of trying out a change is to allow it time to either take or fail.

                    Wow!

                    I must have been sleeping. There are some big changes at this forum.

                    I was a frequent visitor, and a once-in-a-while contributor.

                    Now I will have to have more/extra time on my hands when I come to the forum looking for topics of my interests
                    What I liked about the your old style was that it made it very easy to see/find new postings in areas that were interesting to me.
                    Which all-in-all is not that big of a deal.

                    As time goes on, I hope you can re-install some specific categories again.

                    Good luck forum administrators, I hope you get the problems under control.
                    I do appreciate your time, patience and skills.

                    I will still be reading, posting, and hopefully getting outdoors a few times too.

                    See-Ya on the Trail,
                    John

                      Let me get this straight;

                      As I understand it, in order to get rid of off topic posts, everything goes into Everything Adirondack
                      Hunting post->Everything Adirondack
                      Paddling post->Everything Adirondack
                      fishing post->Everything Adirondack
                      hiking post->Everything Adirondack
                      photography questions->Everything Adirondack (although I don't see the old posts there)

                      except if its a gear question then it goes into Gear, Food, and Survival Topics. does that include paddling gear or fishing gear?

                      Looking at the statement of purpose, other topics are still welcome such as paddling, skiing, etc.

                      Basically now the forum has adopted my personal filing system - Everything is filed under M for misc.

                      It doesn't work for me, I hope it works for the Forum.

                      Edited to add: I found the photo stuff - its under Gear, Food, and Survival Now I'm really confused

                        I guess there is no longer a section for ADK Wildlife- don't understand why that should be a topic that gets buried in miscellaneous stuff. It certainly seems to be a topic deserving of it's own caption.

                        As others have said, currently it will be very difficult to find topics of interest without searching.......hopefully this is short term as you work this out. I can only read about so many trip reports.......I believe the forum should be alot more than that.
                        Ahh............Wilderness.......

                          I, for one, love the forum. However, the changes are disappointing and it seems to me like it's harder to use and we could be losing some valuable members. I don't know a whole lot about forums, as I only belong to this one, and give occassional glimpses to Mavs and VFTT, so maybe this is for the better, hopefully.

                          Put my vote in with the old style ADK Forum, for what it's worth. I still love this place and will continue to spend too much time here, according to my wife anyway.

                            Weellllll.....

                            I have to admit I miss the paddling section.. intuitively obvious to even a casual reader. A combination of hiking with my boats to remote Adk streams and the 'soul' of the culture is what drew me here. The spirit of the people that contribute to this forum is what encouraged me to conduct an intro to kayaking clinic. If it were not for the sub-section: "Paddling" , the clinic most likely would not have developed.
                            The sub-sections are an easy and quick way to check out current events in those sub topics. But it's someone else's game and I'll play as best I can.

                              I appreciate everyone's patience and feedback. In time we will be reviewing forum usage and many of the old sub forums may return or return with renewed purpose.
