    2008 Christmas Present? Maybe

Due for release on Christmas Day........

    "Space: The Final Frontier"

The 11th Star Trek movie. The chronicles of the early days of James T. Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise. It's directed by J.J. Abrams (Lost, Mission Impossible III).

it stars Chris Pine as a young James Kirk and Zachary Quinto as a young Spock, Leonard Nimoy also appears in the film as Spock (I'm guessing it starts with the older Spock narrating a flashback).

The controversy so far seems to be the casting of Simon Pegg as Scotty.

The best known actor in the film is Ben Cross who plays Spock's Vulcan father Sarak. Bruce greenwood plays Christopher Pike, who for those non trekkers was the Captain of the Enterprise in the pilot "The Cage" and was played by Jeffery Hunter.

So this is really the Prequel, the first that has been done. Since they killed Kirk off in 2293 (Star Trek: Generations) and again in 2371 after Picard brought him back from his alternate universe, I guess it's good they can't resurrect the Kirk character again.

Anyway, as a sci-fi and fantasy buff and having been around when Star Trek was first on TV, I'm looking forward to this movie.

Now if they would just make some decent movies based on Heinlein books like "Stranger in a Strange Land" or the lesser know, but my favorite "The Number of the Beast".

How about a redo of "Dune"?

And Jeez, do i wish there culd be a new Babylon 5 series, with J. Michael Straczynski writing the episodes. In my opinion this 5 year series was the best Sci-fi to appear on TV. Unfortunately the TV movies they made based on it sucked.

Funny, I never took you for a Trekkie.

I've been following the casting for "ST XI" and it's uncanny how much the new actors resemble the originals. But you forgot to mention that Bill Shatner is upset because Leonard Nimoy has a cameo appearance but not him.

Yes, another attempt at "Dune" shouldn't be ruled out just because it's been done poorly twice already. On the other hand, "Children of Dune" was remarkably good.

Can't be. I met him once, and he's too big to be a Tribble.

I'm thinking you're a Klingon. a warrior with a strong sense of honor.

I read "stranger in a strange land". Didnt get it. Something about a kid raised by martians who starts a cult on Earth. Does that sound correct?
maybe I should read it again

couldnt get more than a few dozen pages into "number of the beast".

Probably wouldn't take me for an opera buff either, and would probably be surprised by my collection of Broadway musical DVD's.

And actually it's TREKKER. a trekkie is a wanabe trekker.

By the way, they are showing a trailer for the new Star Trek movie. It mostly show images of the Enterprise under construction, with a voiceover by Nimoy doing the "final frontier" monologue.

I believe the intent of this movie is not to just bring back the old crew, but to create a new "look" for Star Trek--the way "Batman Begins" completely undid everything started by Tim Burton. It will be interesting to see what happens.
