    Winter Question - Driveways

Justin's "Favorite Winter Activity" thread mentioned shoveling driveways, which I've now done three times today, so it made me wonder...do I get a snow-blower, or keep shoveling? What's the group do? I suppose the 'green' thing to do is shovel, right?

That was last year when I had my broken hip - no such luck this year!

Get a snow blower! I generally just drive over it a couple of times and pack it down using my car.

My neighbor had told me he was going to plow mine.

he didn't. I went out and tried to shovel (against doctors orders because of my health) and only got a couple of shovel fulls and reinjured my rotator.

So i guess i wait for the melt. In the meantime, I'm screwed.

Yea - the Expedition does a good job at that, but with the wacky forecast it leaves hard pack that freezes up in the tire marks.

Hawk - that sucks, sorry to hear. Rotator cuff injuries are a bear to heal...

I guess you'll need your snowshoes to get out then!

No local youngsters around to help out? I had both my rotators done in a 3 year span. I'm slowly working through my joints. Hope yours heals without the knife.

I own a snowblower, but rarely take it out of the garage (not at all last year). By the time I move a car out of the way and get it out and started I can have a good portion of the driveway done. Besides, why pay for a gym membership when you can get all the aerobic and strength training you need right in your front yard?

I used to use my ATV to plow my driveway, but have exclusively, used the shovel for the last 4-5 years. Good exercise, as mentioned above. Kinda like doing it, too.

I agree with exercise thing, and it was amazingly peaceful out there this morning at 430 when I shoveled...

I shoveled our driveway once or twice. The snow blower not only does it faster, it also saves me undue stress on my back. I've never considered shoveling to be 'good' exercise. Seems there's more pull than push and that can't be good for the muscles and joints involved. Who bends at the knees with every scoop?

I'm a shoveler and I kind of like it too. You get warm real quick. I never need a hat because I'm sweating. And there's just something about moving the snow. I like shoveling at night best. It's so quiet, with the world wearing its snow muffler. Sort of like hiking at night.

I would just pick up a beaver and use his tail as a shovel, if I needed to shovel anything. <Yawn> I think it's time for a long snooze.......Zzzzz........Zzzzz........Zzzzz....

Good exercise for sure. Even better if it falls on a weekend. During the week I'm more likely to clear just the bottom by the road and drive over the rest. Two cars 2-3 x a day packs it down well.

Kevin it's push and lift. I think it strengthens joints and muscles just fine if you take your time and don't rush. An hour of shoveling can be very satisfying exercise. Try one of those bent handle shovels.
