  • What kind of stain is used on lean-tos, signs etc in the Adiondacks?

I'm wondering if anyone here knows what type of stain is used by DEC on lean-tos, outhouses, signs etc. It seems to last pretty well and looks good. I built a 16x32 workshop and 8x16 woodshed last year, both with board and batten siding, and now that the house is mostly painted it seems like it would be nice to do something about those other buildings.

Check with the DEC office in Northville. Many of the state signs are produced there. Lean2Rescue gets the stuff in 5 gallon buckets, that could be the source. It is thick and messy. I don't recall the brand name or tint.

We used to use stuff that seemed very similar, although tinted red, on our cabin. I believe it was Rust-oleum.

I'm sure they were originally creosote. A great product, like asbestos. I sure coated a lot of tent platforms at Camp Woodlands in Constantia.
