Wilderness Rescue: On Dec. 31 at 2:45 p.m., DEC's Ray Brook Dispatch received a call from Franklin County 911 reporting that the Tupper Lake EMS squad was dispatched to site 95 of the Fish Creek Campground regarding a 19-year-old male from Lake Clear with a leg injury. Forest Ranger Pete Evans and Environmental Conservation Police Officer Nate Favreau responded to the scene. Upon his arrival, Officer Favreau met with New York State Police and found that the injury was the result of an accident involving a jet sled being pulled behind a pick-up truck. The operator lost traction due to icy road conditions, causing the truck to lurch. The sled then hit a tree and ejected the subject, causing an upper leg injury. The man was taken by Tupper Lake EMS to seek further medical assistance. All units were clear from the scene at 4:09 p.m.

"Wilderness Search and Rescue: On Jan. 2, Forest Rangers assisted Albany County Sheriff's Deputies and State Park Police with a search for a missing 25-year-old man from Albany who was dropped off at Thacher State Park by a rideshare vehicle on New Year's Eve at approximately 11 p.m. Forest Rangers and deputies split up into teams to search below the escarpment trail, near the visitor's center and the overlook parking lot. A crew of Sheriff's deputies located the man conscious and alert but unable to move due to his injuries. Utilizing various rope rescue system techniques, the man was successfully rescued from the woods below the cliff, carried to a staged helicopter, and flown to a local hospital. "

That one is not so funny. There was precedent for real concern at that location. Two years ago a man went missing there and I was on a multiple day unsuccessful SAR mission looking for him. Turned out to be, as was suspected, a determined suicide. His body was not found until four months later amongst the rocks below a cliff.

I'm not laughing. But there must be some way of educating people that there are places you do NOT go to in the dark to climb, and it does not sound like that was a consideration here. Or he was also trying to commit suicide and didn't make it that far. At any rate he put a lot of dedicated people in jeopardy on a night when they would likely much rather been by the fire with family and friends.

That particular individual had a history of mental health issues, and did admit to trying to harm himself, this was no accident.
A person with enough determination will do themselves in...

The Uber driver would be the one that needs the instruction, leaving a clearly distraught individual on a cliff overlook at night, in the winter, that is clearly not prepared for a night time hike.

I have a hard time believing that here in NYS, the great granny state, a dangerous area was open to the public at night. The Uber driver ought to know the area he is driving in and not let someone off in a closed area, or at least attempt to dissuade an individual insisting on accessing a closed or dangerous area, and maybe should have notified authorities (or did, but the article doesn't indicate that the individual had mental health issues, either. It sounds like an Xer out on a lark for New Years.)

As far as I know, the park is closed after dusk.

How about a quick phone call to authorities before leaving the drop off?
That may not have prevented the leap, but at least shortened the time before a rescue

It's technically closed, but it's not physically closed. There is no gate on the road that passes through the park. it's "closed" in the sense that the visitors center is closed, and the police might investigate any parked cars, but anyone can drive through the park at any time.

Right - the road is a public roadway so that doesn't close, but once anyone left the roadway and entered the actual park properties they were violating the rules, as the Park site says:
>> The park is open year round, 7am until sunset. <<
And almost midnight is well past sunset.
