Can we please , just let the oil companies drill here in North America. We have lots of oil right here , the mid west , the contenental shelf off both shores , the gulf , and ,anwar. The tech is there with lots of oversite to make it happen and minimize any long or short term enviromental damage.
Build some new refineries here in the US. The 30 + year old ones need to get replaced and upgraded , and we need more.
Split some atoms for electricity , there is a place in the Pacific that inducts from the continental plates and would recycle the nuke waste back where it came from.
[B] Stop buying oil from people that hate us [/B], get back to the old American princibles of being self sufficient. And keep what we make here in North America.
Those things would bring down the cost of gas and heating oil for the short term and even out to mayby 50 years. In that time technology can be created and tested LONGER TERM to make sure we don't jump from the pan into the fire because we didn't look before we lept.
What happens to those batteries that powered your green car when they wear out ? Those curly Q lightbulbs filled with mercury ?
I'm not saying don't keep learning and making advancements , we need to. I'm saying that we can become much less dependent on oil from the mid east and veneswalia <sp> And then we can take the time to thoroughly test and improve the new techs BEFORE implimenting them.

I was just playing with some numbers a few weeks ago and determined that the break even point for shutting down an oil furnace and heating with electric is about $4.60 per gallon. That's the exact same figure quoted in the nytimes article for viability of the Green Freedom concept. And we're approaching it quickly. Seems that the marketplace (i.e., $$$$$) might be leading us toward solutions after all.

And colden46's observation (below) applies not only to autos but to home heating ... there are some real advantages to consolidating the energy production into a few large sources rather than having an oil furnace in every home.

It doesn't completely defeat the purpose. Remember, given the choice between one giant plant burning fossil fuels (a power plant) and a million small ones (everyone's internal combustion engine), one giant plant is better. First and foremost, it is easier to install good pollution controls on one plant than on a million. And some small but significant percentage of our energy (~15%) is generated from renewable sources, or nuclear, and if/when that percentage increases hydrogen generation would likewise get cleaner. The same cannot be said for our automobiles.
