Free campsites in the Adirondacks

For now I live in my van. Actually, I am quite addicted to wandering around and camping. I lived in my RV from 2006 to the beginning of this year. Now I converted my van into a nice cozy space for camping.

No longer can I strap a pack to my back and take off. I'm older and wimpier, so I am happy to camp from my van

I love the free camping at Moose River! Are there other places like that? I did find a list of free primitive sites for the disabled and the free place called John Dillon Park.

For disabled folks....

free access pass to state parks, etc..

There are other free places to camp in wildlife management areas and
random spots I have not figured out how to look up.

For anyone...

One of my favorites is a small lake near Paul Smith's. It seems like it says something about a special fishing area on the sign. Anybody know that place and how to find more like it? Thanks!

Ooooohhhhh....thanks Keith :-) I copied down all the suggestions on the other thread. I've been camping in the Adirondacks since the summer if 1956 If I were smarter, I would ALWAYS stop at likely campsites and write them down for future use. It's on my to-do list!

Wendy There are some places to camp in Whitehouse and along West river road in Wells.

From there you hike in the Silver Lake Wilderness, then Benson to Whitehouse and Whitehouse to piseco sections of the NPT. Some nice Bushwhacks in from blackbridge, Hikes into the West branch gorge and bushwhacks from Whitehouse up into Dugway Mountain, etc.

You are also within driving distance for some nice day or overnights into the Bennet, Middle and Murphy lakes, Wilcox lake, Pine Orchard, Dunham Pond, Griffin Gorge, Auger, Austin and Christine Falls, Siamese Ponds, the East branch, Cod Pond, and a lot of hikes off route 10 along the West branch of the Sacandaga.

Camping at primitive sites

I have really appreciated all the suggestions for camping. I've tried out quite a few since I first wrote. They have been some of the BEST places I have ever car camped in the Adirondacks! I live in my van so am out camping almost every day. THANKS!!!!!

I believe you are speaking of Mountain Pond (about 5 miles north of PS on Rt. 30), a very nice little trout pond (catch-and-release only). There are, I believe, six drive up sites along the shore.
