French Louie's old camp on Pillsbury?

Does anyone know where on Pillsbury Lake French Louie's old camps used to be? He had the two lean-to's, and then He built his first "bigger" camp there as well - right?

I only know of the cave and foundations near Cedar Lakes (unsure if the foundation was FL's though, doubt it).

We have several French Louie historians on this board, and 2 of them are actually hiking right now. I'm sure both will have input for you tonight or tomorrow.

There is a stone fireplace near West Lake, that according to the ADK guide for the NPT, was part of one French Louie's unfinished camps.

I thought I remember reading that Louie had to take a boat to the camp on Pillsbury. That would but the camp across the lake from the trail.

That's the one. I've been there but would have to look at a CL map to remember where the heck it was. Thanks.

I've been hanging and reading here for sometime, and would like to thank you you folks for mentioning French Louie and Trume Haskell. Trume Haskell is my great grandfather. I have several photos of myself with him, but thats lots of years ago.
Thanks again.

That is really cool.

Do you have any pics of you and him that you would like to post? Any stories of his that you would like to pass along?

Awesome!

I hunt and play in the "general" area, and love the history there...French Louie is mandatory reading for our crew...."By' da holy feesh!"

I'd love to sit and talk some time!

My regards...

I gave my regards to Louie this past Saturday morning. He is in the Speculator Village Cemetery, which I'm sure most are aware. I believe that there are also some Haskells there, along with some Sturges (Sturges House) and many of the adirondack legends we have read and dreamed about. My friend that was buried there Saturday was one of the Buyce family, of the famed Buyce Adirondack Guide boat (I Believe John F. Buyce, blacksmith and boatbuilder was a friend of Louies). In tribute, I paddled in Lake Pleasant with my gear for a while, but seems the fish had other thoughts. Great place full of great people. L

We have a camp in nobleboro... I love it up there , have been going for almost 30 years now.

I recently found out that Johhny Leaf was buried there. I think I will go by and have a drink with him this weekend.

I would love to see the French Louie camps as well. I will have to make a point of swapping my fishing boots for my hiking boots next summer.

Kunjamuk Cave

Can someone tell me the story of the Kunjamuk Cave? Was this known to be used by French Louie, or is folklore?

To Slamdog---

Yes John Buyce the Blacksmith/Boat builder was a trusted friend of French Louie. Every time French Louie hiked into town from Pillsbury, he would give John a portion of the money he received for his pelts to hold, and then would go drinking until his pocket money ran out. John always had money for FL for an emergency (like food). The FL marker at the Speculator cemetary was erected in 1954 I believe by local schoolchildren in his memory.

Does anyone know where Charlie Johns is buried, or any family??? Also same for Halsey Page, the forest ranger. He was my role model as a kid.
