I'm reading a book on Hiking the 46 Peaks and in some of the stories it mentions a bus from the Ausable Club to the hiking trails...This doesn't run for the public anymore, does it? My brother has had buses pass him on this road, maybe just for the guests?

It still runs, but only for members. I've ridden the bus a few times, back when it was allowed. It dropped you off just before the boat house, with a stop or two along the way. Very convenient, as that road walk gets old very fast, especially on the way back from a long hike. I seem to recall paying $6 to ride it before they closed it to the public. There used to be car parking much closer to the tennis courts as well. They elminated that, and now you must park down by the entrance near Roaring Brook Trail.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts...When this guy first road the bus it was $1...When they raised it to $2 he had second thoughts about walking instead, when it went to $3 he was a bit older and gladly paid...

Dick, my brother estimates the hike in from the parking to the trails at about 2-3 miles.
What do you think?

It's tough to plan fishing trips and hiking trips too as my bride is now into both having done Cascade and Porter in May and catching her first flyrod trout last week...Such problems, there could be worse issues I know...

It depends upon which trail, but it's about 3 1/2 miles from the gate to the boathouse, plus the walk from the parking lot, and about 700 ft. elevation gain. I think I do remember paying $2 the first time I rode the bus. However, we've walked that road more times than I can count. It's not really all that bad, and you can certainly make good time, but a little hard on the feet after hiking mountains.

Marzw- The road walk isn't that bad. If I can do it, then your lovely bride can also. Yes, after covering a few peaks it can be a bit tiring on the way out, but it's downhill and for some reason my son and I tend to perk up on that road out. We're usually singing or talking by then and it goes quite quickly.

The hard part for you will be walking by members fishing in the stream, now that's a killer.

Jim Burnside's book is a good read (my assumptions that is what you're reading?)

Yes, fvrwld, I have heard about these trout and have seen nice pics from my brother Sparky as he has passed the spot you are talking about...Oh, well, hiking is just as nice as fishing, sometimes better, hear that WB...
