We need a TR for the time the site was down

I understand our webmaster was hiking in NH!
Good role model! If you belong to an outdoors site its good for the webmaster to enjoy the outdoors.

Thank you for the fix. Wasn't it a great weekend for all?

Some of us can come and go without being noticed. Others arent so lucky on their escapes.

Unfortunately our hosting server group decided this would be a good weekend to update some of their PHP protocols, which of course no longer worked with the version of vBulletin we use here for the forum. Kyler was able to 'downgrade' the PHP version to be compatible, but it is apparently only a temporary fix, and we need to decide how to handle it going forward. We will have more updates once we better understand our options.

There is a big problem looming with incompatibility issues between server and forum software versions. Unless we make an important change the lights will go out. We will be having a conference call soon to discuss the solutions available to us.

We (and you all) want to avoid the really bad issues we ran into when we upgraded the other forum. Stay tuned.

Simply tell this "server group" that you do NOT want to be upgraded in the future - if they refuse to do that, tell them they will no longer be getting your business and you'll be finding someone else to work with - that might make them think twice about listening to their customers if they think they will lose them.

If everyone would do this, all these silly companies would stop constantly trying to fix things that aren't broken (and just result in more work and cost for everyone)

Choosing to stay with an outdated version of software (i.e. refuse an upgrade) is an option. However, the service provider may only offer it at a premium.

They do these upgrades in order to address the needs of the majority of their clients and to minimize their internal operating costs. It increases their operating costs to maintain outdated software for a minority of users. They may offer it but with additional charges to make it worth their time.

It largely boils down to the fact that the version of vBulletin we use for this forum is quite outdated, and no longer supported. We therefore need to determine how, when and how far we go in bringing this up to date.
