West Stony Cr. via NPT, SMWF

On Sunday, 27 Sep 2015, I joined the Adirondack Wilderness Explorers for a trip on the newest section of the Northville-Lake Placid Trail. The day before, Bill, Justin and "Lurker" had hiked from the Northville trailhead on Gifford Valley Rd. They had set up camp just off of the NPT at the mouth of Trypoli Creek deep in the Shaker Mt. Wild Forest of Opportunity. The plan was for me to walk down from Benson Road and hike out together.

Surprisingly, everything went as planned for this trip. I hit the Benson Rd. trailhead early (photo 1). The new section of the NPT was well planned and had that new trail smell to it (photo 2). It took a little less than two hours to hike down to the ford over the West Stony Creek (photo 3). I had no problem finding the Explorer's campsite as their cooking fire was a bacon-beacon (photo 4).

After some hearty handshakes and backslapping, we had several good chats about hiking and all things Adirondack. We were treated to a low fly-by from a bald eagle who was cruising the valley looking for fish. The Explorers then showed me the photos from their hike up West Stony Mt. the day before. The views looked stunning. I then did some exploring of my own. I was immediately impressed by the view of the ledges on the mountain from the creek bottom (photo 5). The water in the West Stony Creek was very low, which exposed some neat rocks along the ice meadows (photo 6). The campsite along Trypoli Creek (photo 7) was well sited and had a great fireplace and bench.

After a wholesome and nutritious brunch, we all packed up and headed back up the hill towards Benson Rd. Again, it was about two hours to the road over a good trail that was enjoyable to walk. I do enjoy walking solo on many of my explorations, but there's something neat about walking with a larger group. You always learn something new and exciting. I can't wait for the next time I get to go with this crew.

Once a year, go some where you've never been before.
