Is Aunt Polly's still open?
I noticed Aunt Polly's website is down and I wondered if this establishment is still open? If not, any lodging recommendations near Upper Works?

They sold the house and property which is now being used as a private residence. I think the horse and carraige rides to Santononi are still available by the new owners.

Yes... i checked it out... but it looks like you have to book quite a bit in advance..and a sticky cancellation policy.
Why are there no places to stay in near Upper Works? Has the mining contaminated water/soil? |

Don't Drink the Water...lol :)
Have you ever been in the region? It's pretty remote and could hardly support enough business for a motel or hotel to survive. Maybe one day tourism will over run the area and that will change, not this decade I'm afraid.

Although it would be nice to see the black Mt gone and something growing there I truely doubt that the rail will ever travel that line again. I worked at the mines and lived in Tahawus up until the town was moved to Newcomb and had more then one time road the train from Tahawus to North Creek. It offered some spectacular views in some of the wildest areas anywhere.

There is a B&B in Olmsteadville...... about twenty five miles to upper works trailheads. Also, only a stones throw away from the B&B is Hornbeck Canoe.

Aunt Polly's B&B is closed but Doug and Maggie still own The Annex next door. The Annex is for sale but they will continue to rent until it sells.
Cloud-Splitter Outfitters has two rentals in Newcomb as well. www.cloudsplitteroutfitters.com |
