USGS Maps

I didn't notice any posts on it in here so I thought I would mention it...

The USGS has topo maps availble in PDF format free of charge.

Yep, it's true. Click on "Map Locator and Downloader," and then on the next page, click on "Try It Now!" Use the Google Map to locate your area of interest, double click to set a mark point, and then double click the mark point and you can download the map for free. It's easy. All the kids are doing it.

Sure enough, it seems to work ok for me. Takes a bit of surfing around the pages to get to the right place. For a long time I've downloaded NY quads for free in Tiff format, lots of resolution detail in those. NG Topo is good too.

I use and sometimes print out these digital maps for reference, but there's just something about the old style folding paper maps I have to hold on to. My paper collection includes just about all of the Adirondacks and surrounding areas. It's time to renew some of them.

Yes, it works and it's more user friendly than topozone.

Roland,

Try this:

http://store.usgs.gov/scripts/wgate/...&~OKCODE=START

Then click on the little graphic that says, "Map Locator and Downloader, Try It Now!"
