Cedar River Flow quickie
Spent a couple days on the Flow, site #4, it's big and comfortable, but not as big as #3.
BTW, the online DEC map (PDF) is not accurate. Not counting the sites at the dam, there are 6 sites on the flow. 5 on the E shore, 1 on the W shore where the NPT approaches the Flow. Site #4 has a great view of Payne Mt and the cliff bands that we didn't bushwhack. (Future forays will be paddle in from Payne Brook, bushwhack up Payne to the cliffs.) I did check out #3 on a bluff with much room and a little beach. We did paddle up Buell Brook as far as possible, it's worth the effort. Large group on #6 had a stomping bull moose under their hammocks at 2:30 AM...many flashlights and a confused guy wandered off without incident. Colors are near peak, my buddy (hickoryskier) tried to wake me for a sunrise rainbow photo, I took too long to put on my rain gear to get the whole thing. Lots of wind. Put in with Snowy in the background Near Payne Brook Site #4 with table (courtesy of group on #6 a few years ago) Buell Brook Foreground: Man-boat Background: Manbury View from #4 in "magic" light hickoryskier's photo (while I slept/dressed) |

Nice report. There are two sites on the west shore. The NP site and another marked site a short paddle back toward the dam. I was there twice this past week. On the first trip as I emerged from Buell Brook, a bull moose was swimming across the Flow and I got pics. Never saw it on second visit.

Those are great pictures, especially the rainbow. Is that hickoryskier's Osprey that he built a few years ago?

Enjoyed the trip report and especially the photos. Makes me want to jump in my QW kayak and find the nearest island campsite. That rainbow pic is incredible!

That canoe came out great! I don't know if I would trust it though with my size and weight. I might need outriggers! Great photos.

Didn't you love how some jackholes stripped the bark off the huge birch tree and killed it, and then some other jackhole hacked about 1/4 way through it with a hatchet, and it's leaning right toward where you set up your tents?
![]() Gorgeous rainbow pictures. I wish I saw that. I stay at that site often. I was there sunday and monday and had a great couple of days. Glass smooth. Compared to the weekend before, when I didn't think we were going to be able to paddle back out until the wind died down toward nightfall, it was incredible. |

Amazing pictures. It was an incredible weekend last weekend. I heard about that encounter in town talking to some people, word got around quick about that moose!
We paddled the flow a couple weeks ago scouting spots, is site 4 the one just past the sandy beach area? When we were there, we heard the loons calling to each other and the echo was throwing them off i think because they really got to calling back and forth, sounded like a whole flock! |

I was lucky to have this one last trip with hickoryskier (Dave)
He was my paddling, skiing, biking, hiking, camping buddy for over 40 years. We worked together on and off for 35 of those years. He was the brother I never had, we discussed everything. Everything. He will be missed... |
