Just back from a great weekend at Thirteenth, 7/25 - 7/27. We were surprised by the limited number of designated wilderness sites but we finally scored what turned out to be "Elizabeth Point". Although gorgeous, one drawback is being at the end of a hiking trail (bathers w/ dogs etc, coming right through our site on Saturday). I have a question for anyone who has been there lately: directly across from us, 2 peaks south of Thirteenth Lake Mountain, there was a bright light just down from the peak. Could have been a lantern but was very bright (LED type blueish hue) I,ve read on this forum about new trails being created west of the lake and was also informed at the canoe launch about recent trail clearing crews. Could this have been DEC or someone camping up there? The light stated at dusk and appeared to be all night long both Friday & Sat. nights. Just curious. My brother and our sons are speculating wildly (play ominous music now).

I've camped on Elizabeth Point many times. My family used to own the last house on Old Farm Rd just before it turned to state land. From what I remember, there is the drive up camping area at the north end of the lake, one just south of it on the west side of the lake, Elizabeth Point, and one site all the way at the southern end on the west side just before the beaver dams and stream that fills the lake.
Whenever I've camped there, I haven't had a problem with others crashing the party. Maybe they were more polite back then.
As for the light and rumored new trails, I haven't a clue. I've hiked to Peaked Mt. Pond several times from the west shore of 13th Lake.Martin

About three years ago, during the summer, my wife and I stayed one night at Elizabeth Point. Around dusk a bluish lantern type light appeared at the location you described and was on all night. I wondered about it for a while and figured someone hung a LED lamp in a tree.
I too thought it was odd. It's not in a place I would think is good for spending a night. Looks too steep to have a campsite and wondered if people were using hammocks. I'm curious if there is a secret campsite up there.
Any one else see the light?

I saw the light!!!!
I camped at Elizabeth Point last February and saw the light you are talking about. At the time I thought that maybe someone was camping over there. If anyone knows what is going on with this, I would be very interested in hearing about it.
Here is a picture of my campsite from that trip. I used the "lower" campsite at Elizabeth Point to avoid the wind off the lake. This was important since the temps got down to -4 degrees!!!!

Sounds to me like someone left one of those solar, led-type walkway lights up there. My neighbor has a couple leading to his porch. Now why someone would leave such a thing on top of a mountain is another question.
I sometimes think that one odd effect of globalization and extremely low Walmart-type prices for stuff, generally, is an increasing willingness of some people to carry stuff in and then just leave it behind-- it's too cheap to be worth the trouble to carry it out. Grrr...

Could it have been left by "the mountain man" Alan Como, who claimed to have lived in the woods for 20 years? (See article in the March/April 2007 issue of Adirondack Explorer) Just a thought.****************************

Yeah but, wasn't he living near Beaver Pond near Brant Lake? Seems a little far to migrate....But who knows for sure how many hermits there actually are in the Adirondacks...??
Would the solar led light's last all night long??
I'm game for a closer look....

I have been wanting to go on an overnight with my son. Hopefully if I can get some time off and good weather early next week I will take him to Elizabeth Point and hope we get to see the light.
If it is still there, I would be interested in locating it too.

I thought long & hard about posting a map...but here it is. I vote for removal if it is a solar light.Attached Files
