Pillsbury Mountain Fire Tower Trail Head access

Group-

I am planning on hiking the West Canada Lakes loop from Pillsbury Mt. trail head. Is there limited access to the Old Military Road to get to the parking lot? If so when does it typically open?

Thanks for any help.

Usually these dirt roads open mid to late May, but the way this spring is going it might be more like mid to late June.

Any idea how close to the trail access is possible at this time of year?

I had also planned to do the loop next week but wondering if I need a new plan.

Last year, the gate at NY30 was opened around May 11 - next week, you can always start hiking from Rt.30.

Itd be about a 6.5 mile road walk to the Pillsbury Mountain trailhead from Route 30.

I found the ranger's email address and sent them an email. I also was given this DEC site on the NTP Facebook group. Now the Russians know too :-).

https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9200.html

It has the status of the road and general statements.

I thought the road in from Mason Lake doesnt open until later in Spring. Id call and ask about it, in the Hamilton County Highway department.

Last year I was turkey hunting around Mason Lake and the road wasn't open. Not sure the exact date, but I believe it was the 2nd week of May. They were grading the road when I was there and the road crew indicated they would be opening it in a couple of days. But that was last year. Could well be June before it opens this year.
