Scouts selling ADK camp...

The Hiawatha-Seaway Council of the BSA is selling Camp Portaferry . The camp lays right on the blue line just outside Harrisville along Route 3. It's 450 acres around a pond that also has 2 or 3 private camps. Their plan is to increase the use of Camp Sabattis on Lows lake. You can expect to see about twice as many scouts there as you would have in years past. Anyone connected to the Nature Conservancy or other organizations that purchase land for protection may want to keep an eye on this one. The council is trying to find a developer to buy it for putting up private camps, etc.

My very first scout camping experience so many years ago was at Portaferry. So sad to see it go. In recent years it has not been well attended, and is not a "high adventure base" as Sabattis is for the council.

Also for sale is the 4H camp up by Speculator. Like the boy scout camp, under attended and too expensive for the 4H to keep up.

That's what I heard first about Portaferry, but recently, I thought I read in the Watertown Times that they decided to keep it. Or- words to that effect.

Too bad the Watertown Times doesn't allow archive searching without having to subscribe. I get the paper....not going to have an online subsciption, too.

I spent a lot of summers at Portaferry. It will be sad to see it used for anything else.

The last I heard (my father is on one of the council committees) was that they planned to keep it open through the summer of 2007, and then sell, or sell under the condition that they don't turn over the property until fall of 2007. My father didn't know what the asking price was though.

That's what we were originally told, but the council just up and changed their mind. They didn't even give any warning. Just decided to sell it. There are more than a few people in the Northern Lights District that are unhappy about it and trying to put a stop to it. We'll see.

Camp Kingsley (Revolutionary Trails Council) is dangerously close to the same fate and may well be next. RTC owns Cedarlands and Russell, and cannot long aford to keep all 3 camps.
